To Whoever This May Concern:

I apologize for stealing your Sharpieยฎ during my current book tour. As you can see, I couldnโ€™t help it.

It started with the one I borrowed when booksigning in Virginia. But somewhere between there, and San Francisco, my obsession went horribly wrong.

But you see, we donโ€™t get Sharpiesยฎ in France. And I just couldnโ€™t resist yours.

Your Sharpieยฎ was so new and so very alluring with that perfectly tapered ink-filled tip.

So round.
So firm.
So plump.

Yes, I kept promising myself, โ€œDavidโ€ฆmake this the last one!โ€

But one thing led to another. And another Sharpieยฎ found its way into my pocket.

Then another.

But I will make sure that your Sharpieยฎ has a nice, cozy, and safe place in Paris.
I apologize for an inconvenience this may have caused you.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours truly,

David Lebovitz

Sharpies are addictive even when theyโ€™re readily available at oneโ€™s neighborhood Office Max.

whats the attraction of sharpies? ive never heard of them? arent there lots of these type of markers around? what makes sharpies special?

Have you seen the mini-sharpies and the neon-rainbow ones? Iโ€™ve even seen ones attached to a key ring.

Ben: If youโ€™ve never had the pleasure of using a freshly-opened Sharpie, youโ€™re missing out one of lifeโ€™s great pleasuresโ€ฆ

    The smooth tip!
    The glossy black ink!
The semi-wide swatch it creates across the page!
    Ahh, blissโ€ฆ

Gail: Yes, Iโ€™ve seen those Sharpies (and even a brown one intended for covering scratches in wood furniture). I love the keychains, but Iโ€™d be afraid they would come uncapped in my pocket

So does that mean you have a Sharpie in your pocket? I was out buying wine with a friend for a party we were headed to and she asked if I had a sharpie. I looked at her and laughed out loud-who carries Sharpies around!? I guess more people than I thought: )

    Apparently not the French.
Sacrรƒยฉ Bleu! Est-il que les Franรƒยงais รƒยฉcrivent avec une plume? Ma Foi!

Have you seen the Sharpies RT yet? RT stands for retractable tip. They click open and shut like a ball point pen so that you never have to worry about losing the cap. They are very cool.

What a funny post! My husband is always stealing pens. At first, I thought he did it by accident. However, many pens later I realized it was not only on purpose but he was quite happy when he snagged a really good one!

I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation at Sur La Table in Los Gatos. You are truly a warm, kind and funny (in a good way) man.

    duh!
I only just realised you are famous.
No wonder. That explains everything to me.
I was kind of confused before.

My two sons find delight in watching me nearly skip into office supply stores on those occasional days that we โ€œneedโ€ something.

So I absolutely know the feeling you are describing with the opening of a new Sharpie *insertCircleR*. I get a โ€˜highโ€™ with certain supplies I seem to โ€œNEEDโ€ from such said stores.

Btw, do they have office supply stores in Paris? Iโ€™d love to visitโ€ฆ.but alas Iโ€™m busy running a business, raising two awesome human beings, (three if you count my husband), training two beagles, homeschooling two future Nobel Peace Prize nominees, training them to cook so they donโ€™t need to marry the first THING that comes alongโ€ฆ.lalalalaโ€ฆ

I covet your Paris-ic life everytime I โ€˜lurkโ€™ in your blog. *sigh* Someday. When Iโ€™m done assuring the future of the planet earth with my awesome humans. lol.

so, I carry about 4 sharpies with me all the time โ€“ donโ€™t ask.
but imagine my surprise when I saw THREE sitting in a pen-cup on my bosses desk in PARIS in the heart of the MARAIS! Where the heck did they come from, I asked most politely (barely able to contain my eyeballs in my sockets). I believe she told me the monoprix. Biggest mensonge i ever heard โ€“ but she did say in Paris somewhere. Oh yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
