    So, where now may one buy the best hot salt beef (with its fat lwft on) on rye sandwich in NYC? Tell me, please.

    Oh no! Somehow I completely missed that 2nd Ave was closing. I went in October, and it was all so delicious, plus the place was jam-packed with diners. Our friend’s order of matzoh ball soup was perfection. So sad. :-(

    Well, I think they were losing money everytime I went. I ate far more than my share of those amazing half-sour pickles they would leave on the table, Melissa. (Ok, I’m sure I’m not the only guilty party that filled up on them!)
    John: Other good delis in New York are Katz’s (people swear by their pastrami, but I’m a corned beef kinda guy), and Carnegie Deli, which some people dismiss as touristy but their towering sandwiches are still some of the best in Manhattan.

    Their was a NY Times article last week, apparently the Second Avenue Deli rent went up substantially, about $9k per month. It will probably become a Starbucks (since there aren’t enough in New York City as it is…)

    I plan to write a eulogy later today myself. I like Katz – it truly is excellent – but 2nd Ave. has always been my favorite. Like you, I probably contributed to their demise by devouring too many of the complimentary quarter-sour pickles and cole slaw. So sad. There’s another article about the closing in today’s NY Times.

    So sad. Back when this deli was one of the few thriving standouts in its tattered neighborhood, who would have guessed that the neighborhood would grow so fancy that one of its greatest attractions could not afford the rent?

    When urban neighborhoods go upmarket, they so often loose the very things that gave them their character to begin with,and which attracted the money people in the first place.

    So sad to see it go.

    oh no. i almost ate there last year. in fact, we were standing outside debating whether or not our full bellies could accommodate more food. now i’ll never get to try their matzoh ball soup.

    I met briefly Sharon Lebewohl ( sp?)the daughter of the famed owner of the 2nd Ave deli and have her book/cookbook which recalls all the famed recipes and celebrities who ate there makes me realize that although the deli is gone, it will live on through the book she wrote. That was a landmark place that will be missed!!!
