Nutella

Today is World Nutella Day, and Iโ€™m caught with my trousers down. I prepared a dish (well..sort of) but didnโ€™t get around to writing up something unusually profound to say, so a picture of it is going to have to do for now.

I got sidetracked by a whole bunch of stuff, and had a lot of things I was going to post about this week, then along came 89 other things, plus an appointment with the podologue, so Iโ€™ve been washing my feet like mad, I mean, scrubbing them really, really well before my rendez-vous. Seriously, I think I spent the better part of the week washing them.

Anyhow, hereโ€™s a shot of Nutella, in a slightly different form than you might be used to seeing it in.

Itโ€™s part of a post Iโ€™m in the middle of, but got sidetracked by taxes (in two languagesโ€ฆso please donโ€™t complain if youโ€™re just doing them in one), four-to-six sinkloads of pots and pan which Iโ€™m confronting on a daily bases, a lesson yesterday in making galettes that made me feel like a total f-ck-up, plus I had to spend a few days figuring out why Iโ€™m contractually unable to put up a killer-good chocolate recipe that I spent two weeks testing and working on.

So Iโ€™ll be posting the story behind my Nutella shot in the next week.

Uh, better make that within the next ten days, and give myself a little leeway. Who knows whatโ€™s going to come up in the meantime? So itโ€™s back to washing dishes. And maybe Iโ€™d better give those feet of mine another once over, while Iโ€™m at it.

To read what this is, and how I did it, check out my post Playing with Powder.

    Hang in there David!!!

Whatever this powder is, Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s made from nocciole Piemontese and cioccolato torinese!! Canโ€™t wait to see what youโ€™ve come up with.

    Donโ€™t forget nyc/caribbean ragazzaโ€™s fun take on World Nutella Day . . .

Happy World Nutella Day! Thanks for participating and helping spread the word. I canโ€™t wait to see the follow-up post and what you use it in! I have a feeling what it might be but Iโ€™ll wait and see if Iโ€™m right ;)

    • nyc/caribbean ragazza

I have never seen it in that form before.

Iโ€™m looking forward to seeing what your dish will be.

Thanks for the shout out KimB!

I didnโ€™t know there was a World Nutella Day! I have a wonderful little tin of chocolate hazelnut spread that I bought at Le Grand Epicerie two years ago this week. I think itโ€™s time to take it our of my fridge and eat some on a baguette (if it isnโ€™t covered in mold by now).

When I lived in Germany as a kid, I used to eat Nutella spread on toast every morning. That was when I was 13, and my metabolism has sadly slowed down since then. Also, a note, Nutella and peanut butter is a delightful combinationโ€“although I am sure some people will think this is disgusting.

Is there liquid nitrogen in your future?

Once again, I feel woefully under informed. Are Canadians intentionally being left out of these fun events? Whatโ€™s wrong with our media and PR companies?

Recently, Iโ€™ve been lobbying to change our upcoming Province of Ontario Family Day holiday to Pie Day. We need more of these food related events!

    http://danamccauley.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/change-family-day-to-pie-day/

Hi Dana: The event was/is open to all! So get that jar of Nutella off the shelf, and start baking! -dl

    I know, I know!

    Itโ€™s from Alinea, right?

    Hehe.

After reading the title of this post and then the bit about your feet, I really feared that might be a picture of foot filings! Happy World Nutella Day!

    • 12th Man Training Table

Google โ€œDr. Allen Limโ€ and nutella (add rice just for good measure) and youโ€™ll get a cool homemade energy bar, used by the Garmin/Chipotles cycling team at the Tour de France.

Nutella and a banana may be the worldโ€™s snack that can swear you off candy bars forever.

    Happy trails!

Itโ€™s too bad World Nutella Day didnโ€™t coincide with National Crepe Day. Can you imagine the possibilities? I wonder if Nutella goes with cheeseโ€ฆ.

    • shauna

Oh David, itโ€™s okay. As long as you didnโ€™t post a photograph of the ice cream you concocted with dried foot scrapings, youโ€™re okay. Oh hell, youโ€™d probably find a way to make that look delicious.

    • michaela

you should hire a dishwasher. :) washing dishes is the worst part about cooking and baking.

    • elra

I didnโ€™t know there is such a thing as โ€œWorld Nutella Dayโ€. Canโ€™t wait what youโ€™ll come up with.
    Cheers,

Aaaargh! what the heck is that a picture of?? dead skin from your feet? Aaargh!

    David,
I saw this recipe for Nutella swirled brownies online called Baci Brownies and they look fantastic. I am going to try for Valentines Day:

    http://christie-corner.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

So reading your post on 89 I am shocked, shocked that you have lactose intolerance and are the author of one of the best books on ice cream ever! How hard was that to taste every recipe? And your IQ is just high enough to get you in trouble ;) meaning that you are smart enough to figure out how not to do path chosen by most people. I really enjoy reading your blog, I am vicariously living in Paris and eating chocolates.

    • pRiyA

i apologize for the slightly nervy previous comment, but i also want to say that i have a jar of nutella ready and waiting for your recipe.

    • Susan

Well, some marketing guru has earned his keep on this day! There is a calender circulating with the various โ€œfood daysโ€ listed for the month. It appears everyday is something special. How could one possibly keep up without a sink full of dishes and aching feet?

    • TamiM

Iโ€™m glad Iโ€™m not the only one who didnโ€™t get it together in time for World Nutella Day. Hoping to get it together by days end here on the West Coast. My excuse: i got distracted making pistachio raspberry swirl ice cream. I figure youโ€™d think that was a good reason:)

    • Aleta

Omigawd, how could there be another excuse for eating Nutella that I didnโ€™t know about. I donโ€™t even have any in my pantry. Iโ€™d better run out to the store or, better yet, do you have a recipe buried in your archives? Thereโ€™s a big bag of hazelnuts in my freezer.

    • valentine

โ€œโ€ฆwhy Iโ€™m contractually unable to put up a killer-good chocolate recipe that I spent two weeks testing and working on.โ€

    What madness lurks here?

(Isnโ€™t there some legal doctrine that allows for the necessary dissemination of killer-good chocolate recipes? Isnโ€™t this covered under FOIA?)

    • City Girl

My theory: crumbs of a nutella cupcake?

    • Lecia

I wish I had read your post before breakfast, so I could have taken full advantage of World Nutella Day.

    • sweet loreto

Mmmmmm! World Nutela Day! Once again you have inspired meโ€ฆ To wash the dishes, get a pedicure, and finally get my hands dirty and perfect my nutela discotti recipe Iโ€™ve been working on for a few weeksโ€ฆ As soon as my baby goes down for his napโ€ฆ :)

    • Martha in KS

I was afraid that the picture was going to be of you with your pants down! Eeek! Happy World Nutella Day (though Iโ€™ve never tasted the stuff)!!

    • janice

Wow. Thereโ€™a a Nutella Day?? There should be!!!! Itโ€™s beyond deserving. YUM!! Now Iโ€™ll go and celebrate with half a jar.

    • Sheela C

Iโ€™ve been reading your blog for almost a year now and canโ€™t believe Iโ€™ve waited this long to tell you that I really love this site. Itโ€™s incredibly entertaining and very refreshing and uplifting (especially for a pre-law student like me). Anyway, keep doing what youโ€™re doing because I think youโ€™re awesome.

    • Linda H

Ah, the awesome (Nutella) and the awful (doctor appointments of any kind).

    • Lauren

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, nutella ice cream is also my favorite โ€“ or at least tied with the sneaky pleasure of a spoonful directly from the jar. Really looking forward to hearing that story behind the powder.

    • Tartelette

I completely forgotโ€ฆ.so to celebrate I just took a big spoonful and danced around the kitchen holding the jar tight :)

    • Stephanie

World Nutella Day and no recipe? I will definitel get the jar out for the kidsโ€™ gouter and maybe even bring it into the bedroom tonight ;) I canโ€™t let a food holiday go uncelebrated.

I love your blog Davidโ€ฆ..please donโ€™t ever leave Paris bc I would be lost. I have never been disappointed with your recommendations.

I am sure you know this but maybe your readers do not. Nutella was created in Italy in the 1940s when chocolate was scarce. Hazlenuts were plentiful so some Italian genius ground up hazlenuts and mixed it with cocoaโ€ฆ.and Nutella was born!

    • mary

oOoo Nutella makes the world a better place!

    • Sunny

I know people who cannot stand peanut butter (Iโ€™m not counting the ones who are allergic โ€” thatโ€™s different.)

But is there ANYbody on the planet who doesnโ€™t like Nutella?

    • Juliana

My guess: you froze it and grated it like a chocolate bar! Whether or not thatโ€™s whatโ€™s in the picture, I think I have to try it.

    • Margie

Halt the presses! Iโ€™m on my way over to do the dishesโ€ฆ.well, as soon as I swim that mighty sea, but first Iโ€™ve got to get across another time zone. Oh heck. Doesnโ€™t look like I can make it. Dang it!

Sorry this is a bit of a frazzle time for you, and your poor feet! Ugh. Nothing worse than having tootsie problems AND tax headaches.

Take care, David. Fret not. We be pulling for ya!

    • Hilary

What a perfect excuse for crรชpes Nutella!! Thanks for letting us know about this awesome day (I love ridiculous food holidays. National Hot Tea Month, anyone?) I will definitely be better prepared for next year

    • Michelle | Bleeding Espresso

Ooh I love a good mysteryโ€ฆlooking forward to the backstory! Thanks so much for participating, and best of luck with those taxes in two languages. I feel your pain.

    • Rianne

Happy World Nutella Day David! I had no idea there was such a day. Canโ€™t wait to see what youโ€™ve created with my beloved Nutella.
I have very fond memories of the first time I had Nutella. I was in Paris with my husband on our honeymoon. We tried a Nutella and banane crepe while walking down Rue Cler. Ahโ€ฆgood times. I loved it so much, I went to the supermarche around the corner and bought jars of it to take home. Little did I know I could buy it in my local grocery store. So whenever I dig my spoon into a jar of Nutella, it definitely takes me back to Paris :-)

    • krysalia

About the galettes, like I said before, thatโ€™s the real difference between those and regular (boringly easy) crรชpes : you need some knowledge and some kind of magic to make a perfect traditionnal buckwheat galette on a bilig. Itโ€™s the same thing as practising to be a jedi, as some friend told me once : when you start not to think when you do it, when youโ€™re in peace, no fear and no anger, itโ€™s easy :) .

bon courage, it worth it ! (and I hope that youโ€™ll teach us after that, Iโ€™m really professional at enjoying buttered galettes but I never succeded to make good ones myself :) )

If you want to see professional galletiรจre at work, I do not remember if I ever gave here the link to this video I made in โ€™06 summer, featuring the worker of a famous crรชperie in Le Croisic (atlantic coast touristic spot). the brush she uses is fully loaded withโ€ฆ melted butter :) . Itโ€™s too much for traditionnal galette, but besides that, the gesture and the grilling time are pretty accurate.

    • Anna

I ran across your website when looking for a recipe for making caramel. I just wanted to say thoroughly enjoyed your posts, You made me smile, on a Sunday morning, before coffee. Thank you.

    • Eric Thomas

As a regular visitor to Italy, (especially Tuscany โ€“ Florence, Lucca and Pisa) Iโ€™m delighted to see how popular and frequently used is Nutella. Now, Nutella Pieโ€ฆthatโ€™s degenerate, but I like it. Well done Tuscany, my spiritual home.
