Paris-Lausanne Tour, September 19-25th

Due to demand for my Paris and Lausanne Gastronomy Tour, weโ€™re offering a second trip this fall. Weโ€™ll begin the week in Paris, exploring chocolate shops, tasting wine, and dining at my favorite tables in Paris. Then weโ€™ll take the high-speed TGV train to Lausanne, Switzerland, to this lovely small city perched above Lake Geneva. With the historic Lausanne Palace and Spa as our homeโ€ฆ

Frenchie Wine Bar

I always think that maybe Iโ€™m kind of a loser because I donโ€™t go out and eat as much as people think I do. Ever since I left the restaurant business โ€“ where I worked every single night of every single weekend of my life, surrounded by other cooks (which probably explains why I am a social misfit when I have to mingle with โ€œnormalโ€โ€ฆ

Chopped Vegetable Salad with Lemon-Garlic Dressing

Americans have a reputation for not eating very well which is disputed by the fact that whenever I have a group of guests come to Paris, everyone is always craving fresh vegetables. Another interesting paradox is that portions in America are huge, yet Americans who come to France (where the portions are more reasonable) find themselves quickly full when dining out. And after a coupleโ€ฆ

Poulet rรดti

Iโ€™ve been leafing my way through a local culinary magazine whose subject for this particular issue is โ€œStreet Food.โ€ And Iโ€™m a little confused because every place mentioned is either a storefront or restaurant, not a place where eat food on the street. I kept digging and digging, turning the pages, looking for some stories about people actually serving street foodโ€”on an actual street. Theโ€ฆ

Green Tomato-Apple Chutney

I was in the Indian quartier in Paris one day, exploring one of the many produce stores, and was thrilled to find what looked like tomatillos. My French friends could not believe how giddy I was to find them. But that giddiness ended when I got into the kitchen, split one open, and discovered by asking around online that they are actually some type ofโ€ฆ

Septime

When I go out to eat, itโ€™s usually not with the intention of writing about a place. I go out to eat to have a good time with friends and enjoy the food. (And perhaps a little wine.) But I found that whenever I donโ€™t expect it, I hit on a place that merits talking about. Septime opened and caused a ripple of excitement inโ€ฆ

Homemade Marshmallow Recipe

Some of my favorite candies are marshmallows. Actually, I should backtrack a bit and say at the very top of my all-time favorite things to eat are marshmallows. I love their pillowy softness and their tender sweetness with undertones of vanilla. If it sounds like Iโ€™m getting a little Proustian for them, youโ€™re right. I recently made several batches for some projects, which not onlyโ€ฆ

Fraises des bois

When I worked as a baker in California, weโ€™d get three flats of fraises des bois (โ€œstrawberries of the woodsโ€, or wild strawberries) for a few precious weeks in the summer, cultivated by a woman who lived about an hour north of San Francisco. Each intensely flavored berry, no bigger than the tip of a pencil eraser, had to be hand-picked and took someone nearlyโ€ฆ

Horchata

By noon yesterday, the temperature in my apartment was nearly 100ยบF (38ยบC) and with the sun bearing down full force on the entire city, and so few trees to provide any shade, it was the first scorching day of summer in Paris. Having lived in temperate San Francisco for much of my life, I was used to days that were always moderate; winter and summerโ€ฆ
