Paris Booksigning โ€“ This Weekend!

This Saturday (April 30), from 4 to 6pm, Iโ€™ll be signing books at WHSmith book shop in Paris. The store will be open as usual during this event so there wonโ€™t be any long-winded speeches from me or anything (whew!) โ€“ so youโ€™re welcome to show up any time and say hi, and get a book signed. Or just say hi! (And check out myโ€ฆ

Turkey Salad with Lemon, Capers, Mustard and Cornichons

Patricia Wells has been writing about Paris for decades, and put a lot of bakeries, restaurants, and reallyโ€ฆanything food-relatedโ€”on the map for visitors. And when Patricia recently invited me and some friends over for lunch in her well-equipped Paris cooking school kitchen to celebrate her new book on salads, I jumped at the chance (okay, I didnโ€™t jump because people would have looked at meโ€ฆ

Paris Tacos y Burritos

Itโ€™s kind of funny because the two times I went out with two different French friends for Mexican food this week, they practically wiped the table clean. Both said after eating, โ€œDaveedโ€ฆjโ€™ai encore faim.โ€ (โ€œIโ€™m still hungry.โ€) The first time was at Cactus, where my friend (who I am pretty sure has .5% body fat) wolfed down his burrito and the aforementioned declaration of hunger,โ€ฆ

La Cafeotheque de Paris

Iโ€™ve pretty much said everything I could about the โ€œcoffee issueโ€ in Paris here*, but one place thatโ€™s trying to buck the trend is La Cafรฉothรจque, a shop and cafรฉ that roasts coffee beans from all over the world. Itโ€™s also one of the (very) few places in Paris where Iโ€™ve seen a person preparing cafรฉ express (espresso) correctly, using a tamping device, and actuallyโ€ฆ

Grapefruit Campari Sorbet

Coming from San Francisco, a place where there essentially arenโ€™t any seasons, itโ€™s been an interesting transition living in France, where each season has its own rhythm and distinct feeling. Winter, as you can imagine, is the least favorite season of the year and this past winter was particularly somber and dismal. Parisians refer to the dreary gray days of winter, and the tristesse thatโ€ฆ

Bits & Pieces: (Favorite Links)

I always thought that someone could make a mint opening up a good coffee place in Paris. Now there seems to be a few whoโ€™ve heeded the call: Coutume Cafรฉ (47, rue Babylon), KooKa BooRa (62, rue de Martyrs), and Le Bal. Quelle difference! And since this is the Year of Mexico, in France, a few new Mexican places have opened up serving authentic (orโ€ฆ

Nunu Chocolates from Brooklyn, in Paris

A few years ago an American friend asked me about opening a pop-up store in Paris, featuring something he creates with chocolate in New York City. At the time, I advised against it. People outside of the United States do have some preconceived notions about how Americans eat (many still think we all eat at fast-food restaurants), but a recent wave of magazine articles aboutโ€ฆ

Quelle difference

The TGV Lyria train makes the trip to Switzerland is just about three hours. If you buy your tickets in advance, first-class seats arenโ€™t that much more expensive than regular fares (sometimes the difference is little as โ‚ฌ5) and as a friend said to me, โ€œSince I donโ€™t use drugs, I spend the extra money on first-class train tickets.โ€ Lest you think first-class is elitist,โ€ฆ

Le Pont de Brent

After my visit to the Vevey market with Chef Stรฉphane Dรฉcotterd, we headed back to Le Pont de Brent, his restaurant located above the lakeside Swiss town of Montreux. While he was laying out the fish for the day, which he had just sourced, I noticed the kitchen was unusually calm for pre-service and I didnโ€™t see anyone in the usual panic that happens inโ€ฆ
