Ten Great Things to Do With Kids in Paris

Iโ€™m often asked about kid-friendly things to do in Paris. Since I donโ€™t have any kids, I asked my friend Paul Bennett, a writer who runs Context Travel and has three small children, to contribute a guest post: Top Ten Things to Do in With Kids in Paris. Thanks, Paul! -DL It always sounds glamorous when I tell people that my wife and I splitโ€ฆ

Comtรฉ

Thereโ€™s sort of some rhyme and reason to my cheese-buying habits. One fromagerie might have the most amazing butter, so Iโ€™ll trek over to the place St. Paul to buy a packet of it. But if I want a round of Selles-sur-Cher, Iโ€™ll go to the fromager at the marche dโ€™Aligre who always has beautiful ones on display. For St. Nectaire and Cantal, Iโ€™ll onlyโ€ฆ

Why Stealing is Wrong

Well, I wouldnโ€™t say it was exactly stealing. But last time I was in the states, I was going through one of my frighteningly-full storage lockers (thereโ€™s your glimpse into the glamorous life of international livingโ€ฆ) and while rifling through cookbooks, I came across my own personal book of handwritten recipes, a fat mess of pages, stained with butter, eggs, almond paste, and lord-knows whatโ€ฆ

Pain dโ€™epices Recipe

Itโ€™s tough call, but Iโ€™d have to say that Flo Braker is my favorite baker in the world. Having known her for a few decades, I canโ€™t think of another baker that I like more. And I wonโ€™t apologize to any other bakers out there, because I think theyโ€™d pretty much agree with me. When I was writing my first book, I remember leafing throughโ€ฆ

How To Use Gelatin

To Use Powdered Gelatin -Sprinkle the granules of gelatin over the surface cold water or liquid. Use 1/4 cup, 60ml, or whatever quantity is called for in the recipe, per envelope. Do not dump the granules in as a pile as the granules in the middle wonโ€™t dissolve or โ€œbloomโ€ properly. -Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes. -Add warm liquid or heat gently, stirringโ€ฆ

Pickled Pepper Recipe

Iโ€™d say a good 20 to 30 percent of my refrigerator space is given over to pickles. I love anything pickledโ€”onions, cabbage, cauliflower, zucchini, and chile peppers. If itโ€™s pickle-able, youโ€™re likely to find a jar of it buried away in the far, deep recesses of my refrigerator. In fact, all of the above (and more) are in there right now, marinating as we speakโ€ฆ.

Mon Dieu! A Hospitel?

If youโ€™re into staying in odd hotels, the most unusual one in Paris is part of Hรดtel Dieu, called Hospitel. Occupying the top floor of Parisโ€™ enormous public hospital, the hotel is adjacent to Notre Dame and features one of the most beautiful hotel lobbies in the world: a sumptuous, verdant courtyard framed by a sprawl of archways. The location of the Hรดtel Dieu wasโ€ฆ

Tandoori Chicken Recipe

Not to simplify some of the worldโ€™s great and highly-nuanced cuisines, but much of their flavors can be accomplished at home by just stocking your pantry with a few of the essential ingredients. The first time I made a tagine, Iโ€™d never mixed spices together like cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, and saffron in one dish. But what came out of my oven about an hour laterโ€ฆ
