La vacance

I hate to tell you this. But not everyone in France gets five weeks for les vacances. While itโ€™s true that most people in France get a five weeks of vacation, I am not quite there yet. Nor am I at the point where I get 7 weeks of vacation, as a few of my friends do. (But thatโ€™s what I continue to aspire to*.)โ€ฆ

Cherry Mess

Faced with an overload of cherries, I had no choice but to make a mess. On a trip to London, and at a dinner in Paris, I was served a couple of messes, an English dessert that traditionally incorporates whipped cream, crumbled meringues, and berries. But like most messes (present company included), they can often go in unusual โ€“ and unpredictable โ€“ directions. Over theโ€ฆ

Pith Helmet

When I was in London, it just happened to be Wimbledon weekend and even though there wasnโ€™t a tennis ball in sight where we were, all we wanted were pitchers of Pimmโ€™s Cup. To our dismay, a number of places didnโ€™t have them, and at the one restaurant that did, we were unimpressed. (So much so that the waiter took it off the bill.) Sinceโ€ฆ

Eating Around London

I never really โ€œgotโ€ London. It was always this hulking city that I struggled to navigate, overwhelmingly large, with a subway system that seemed like a tangle of routes and directions that I just couldnโ€™t unravel. But part of it is my fault as I never really spent a lot of time trying to figure it out. I just accepted defeat early on. So thisโ€ฆ

Sour Milk Bread

I was fortunate to only have few โ€œclunkerโ€ meals during my trip to Sweden. You always feel kind of bad when youโ€™re traveling, especially because you have limited time (and funds) and want every meal, and mouthful, to count. Before going to Stockholm, a friend who I was en voyage with had reserved at Lux, a restaurant in the old Electrolux vacuum cleaner factory โ€“โ€ฆ

Eclairs in Paris

Iโ€™m often asked about upcoming trends and each time it happens, I am sorely tempted to respond, โ€œIf I could see the future, Iโ€™d be buying lottery tickets.โ€ I guess it makes good press โ€“ but the unfortunate thing about most trends is that they are often temporary. (In many cases, itโ€™s a relief to see them go when their time is up.) Yet otherโ€ฆ

The Perfect Margarita

I know tequila fans like to have their say about what tequila is best for Margaritas. But as Iโ€™ve learned with just about everything, the buck stops here. Ok, just kidding. (Actually, Iโ€™m happy to let it stop somewhere else.) But I was having drinks made by a well-known bartender a while back and a few people pointed out online that I wasnโ€™t drinking aโ€ฆ

Faviken

Itโ€™s hard to write or talk about a place like Fรคviken. Not that I have trouble talking, as those around me can attest to, but making the trek top the restaurant far north of Stockholm is as much about the experience of being in a certain time and place as it is about eating the food theyโ€™re serving. Although I donโ€™t necessarily follow all theโ€ฆ
