Pineapple-Ginger Sparkling Wine Cocktail

Whew! Itโ€™s been quite a year. There were some ups and a few downs. Looking back as the year draws to a close, Iโ€™m not sure they balanced out this time around. I had my share of moments when I just had to stop, take a deep breath, and do a little reassemble and reassess. One highlight might include the day at the mobile phoneโ€ฆ

Le Louchebem

Where do you go on a rainy afternoon if you find yourself near the middle of Paris? Quite a bit of the town has emptied out, as people make their exodus away from the city for the holidays. Those of us here are celebrating at home โ€“ or from the looks of things out there โ€“ doing a little last-minute scrambling for holiday gifts. Thereโ€ฆ

Teriyaki Chicken

I always feel like a tourist when I got to a Japanese restaurant because if bento boxes are on the menu, Iโ€™ll scan the other choices, but will invariably choose the teriyaki chicken. I know, I know. Itโ€™s the โ€œsafeโ€ choice โ€“ but I canโ€™t help it. I love anything grilled, especially with a salty-sweet marinade punched up with fresh ginger, then charred over aโ€ฆ

White Vinegar (vinaigre blanc)

The most common bottle of crisp, white that youโ€™ll find in any Parisian apartment isnโ€™t a musky Muscadet from the Loire, or a Petit Chablis from Burgundy. This one comes in a plastic bottle, has a screw top with a little opening just underneath so you can squeeze out a stream as needed, and costs less than a buck. Itโ€™s le vinaigre blanc, and itโ€™sโ€ฆ

Manhattans

There comes a time in everyoneโ€™s life when one needs a Manhattan. During the past few weeks, that time had come for me. Actually, it came for me several times. Iโ€™ve recently been turned on to rye whiskey, and although folks online spoke up about various brands they like when I mentioned my sudden craving on social media, I learned that itโ€™s not something thatโ€ฆ

A Quick Trip to New York City

Last week, I had to make an unexpected trip from Paris to New York City. It was kind of a last-minute affair, But Iโ€™m always up for a trip to New York, even in the winter, which I remember from my years living on the east coast, how brutal they could be. Fortunately we hit a sweet spot and people were actually wearing t-shirts onโ€ฆ

Hot Chocolate Pudding

I had some friends over for dinner recently who were moving away, which is always sad, and they were in the full-on stress of moving; packing up boxes, dealing with logistics, selling most of their things, and taking care of the details of demรฉnagement. I had been leafing through Sinfully Easy Delicious Desserts by chocolate expert (and comrade in chocolate) Alice Medrich, who I wasโ€ฆ

Vin chaud: Hot Mulled Wine

Yes, itโ€™s winter in Paris. And when the temperature drops, folks move inside the cafรฉs to escape the cold, except for the fumeurs, who are remarkably hardy and seemingly immune to the chill outside, while they puff away on cafรฉ terraces. Weโ€™re all bundled up, shivering on the sidewalks, lured into the cafรฉs with chalkboards scrawled with the words, Vin chaud. Vin chaud (hot mulledโ€ฆ

Baci di Dama Cookies

Neither one of us is quite sure how we connected, but so be it. But somehow I kind of remembered Terresa Murphy from San Francisco. However sheโ€™s been living in Paris since the mid-80s, so my memory is either better than I thought, or my mind is playing tricks on me. (Which is a whole nother road that Iโ€™d prefer not walk down right now.)โ€ฆ
