Noglu, Gluten-Free Restaurant in Paris

A long-lost acquaintance of mine got in touch with me a few months back. And I donโ€™t know if there is a French name for phone-tag, or playing the game via e-mail, but we finally fixed a date once the long summer of vacations, closures, and hectic schedules of the rentrรฉe (the annual September return to Paris) were all finally behind us. Laurent, who runsโ€ฆ

Chocolate-Salted Caramel Tartlets

People often ask me, after taking a bite of a caramel in Paris: Why canโ€™t they canโ€™t get caramels that taste like that in America? Like bread โ€“ those kinds of wonderful foods are, indeed, available, but you need to know where to look. A while back I was in Los Angeles and a magazine had mentioned Little Flower Candy Companyโ€™s caramels. So I ranโ€ฆ

La Ruche qui dit Oui!

The word โ€œnonโ€ is often the response of choice in France. And while it makes for funny snickering from outsiders, chuckling at complicated and arcane bureaucracy, itโ€™s become a serious hindrance to innovation and small businesses, which have been having a particularly tough time lately. And thereโ€™s a younger generation of entrepreneurial talent, who have new ideas and are striving to be innovative and inventive,โ€ฆ

Pop-Up Booksigning in Paris

Iโ€™ll be joining the kids of Candelaria this Sunday for a Halloween Jumble Sale! The event will be taking place this Sunday, October 28th and Iโ€™ll be there from 12 to 2pm signing books. You can pick up copies of The Perfect Scoop, Ready for Dessert, and The Sweet Life in Paris. (Iโ€™m happy to sign previously purchased books as well.) There will be hardbackโ€ฆ

Disneyland Paris

Iโ€™ve lived in Paris for nearly ten years, which some folks think is a magic kingdom in itself. And although Iโ€™ve been to the Louvre, Rungis, the Musรฉe dโ€™Orsay, and the crazy-giant Tati store at Barbรจs, Iโ€™ve not been to Disneyland Paris โ€“ until now. Iโ€™d been to the one in southern California as a kid, back when Disneyland featured things we never dreamed ofโ€ฆ

Can I Freeze Cream?

I was recently at Metro, a members-only store that sells things for professionals in large quantities with lots of food items. However unlike โ€œmembers-onlyโ€ stores elsewhere, you need to have some professional affiliation to join. Excitedly, I stocked up on lots of the things that I use a lot of, including cassonade sugar sold in bags close to 5-pounds, hazelnuts, tin containers for giving awayโ€ฆ

The French Dictionary

Someone told me that the English language has more words than the French language, which I donโ€™t believe โ€“ although to be honest, Iโ€™ve never counted. I know English can be kind of kooky at at times, but I donโ€™t think we have multiple words for the same things, from a dozen different words for sinks, to a panoply of words for helmets, depending onโ€ฆ

Yeasted Plum Tart

Iโ€™ve gotta say, Iโ€™ve taken a few dings for not presenting only the best parts of life in a foreign city. People may, or may not, want to hear about dealing with cranky cashiers, rigid administrators, or worse, paper-thin bath towels, instead wanting a perfect story of life in an apartment with a balcony, and watching sunsets every night over chilled glasses of Champagne, toastingโ€ฆ

Canceling Reservations in Paris

Iโ€™d arrived early this weekend at one of the โ€œhotโ€ restaurants in Paris, where I was meeting a friend for dinner, so I chatted up the barman while having a glass at the bar. Since itโ€™s one of my favorite restaurants, I asked him how things were going because I want them to succeed and continue. He replied, โ€œWell, we just had three groups ofโ€ฆ
