The Bread Knife

When I moved to France, the one thing I made sure to bring along was my bread knife. Itโ€™s not that you canโ€™t get bread knives here, but I was particularly attached to mine, having used it for nearly three decades. It was a good value Victorinox at the time, and if you donโ€™t believe that Iโ€™ve had it for so many years, I thinkโ€ฆ

Da Dong/Squid/Les Jules Verne/Yquem

UPDATE: The Jules Verne restaurant is now under new ownership, with a new chef. I now have conclusive proof that Iโ€™m not imagining it: There is an international conspiracy to get me to eat squid. Before you say, โ€œYou should try it breaded and dipped in spicy sauce!โ€ or โ€œYou havenโ€™t tried had my Thai-style squid!โ€ โ€“ I should let you know that Iโ€™ve installedโ€ฆ

Aux Tonneaux des Halles

[Update: Aux Tonneaux des Halles changed owners in 2016. They no longer feature natural wines and theย food on the current menu differs from what is shown and described here.] Every once in a while, it hits me: I need steak-frites. Itโ€™s an infrequent indulgence, but when I do have it, I like my steak with a crisp exterior, pan-seared until saignant (medium-rare), with a largeโ€ฆ

How I Eat

For some reason, people are obsessed with what I eat and weigh and I get a lot of messages that say things like โ€œHow do you stay so thin?โ€ or โ€œHow can you eat all that amazing food and stay in shape?โ€ Itโ€™s not really something that Iโ€™m all that concerned about and not something I pay all that much attention to. And as muchโ€ฆ

Chocolate-Prune Cake

A while back, there was a spate of books about how to โ€˜sneakโ€™ ingredients that are โ€˜healthyโ€™ into food for your kids, to trick them into eating better. (Raymond Sokolov wrote an excellent rebuttal to that.) And recently there have been a few books written about how kids in France eat, and behave, better than their counterparts elsewhere. I canโ€™t really comment on them in-depthโ€ฆ

Restaurant Alain Ducasse

[UPDATE: The restaurant is no long an Alain Ducasse restaurant.] Uncharacteristically, Iโ€™ll spare you the specifics, but I need to catch up on about 147 hours of sleep. And while weโ€™re at it, I could use a hug. And since the former isnโ€™t necessarily easy to come by here, as is the latter, I was embrassรฉ by dinner at Alain Ducasse restaurant. While itโ€™s beenโ€ฆ

Turkey Melon

Not long ago, I mentioned the Lamb Melons I saw at a butcher stand at the Marchรฉ dโ€™Anvers in Paris. Since itโ€™s an afternoon market, I thought it might be fun to mosey over there at my leisure and pick one up for Sunday lunch. However I was surprised to see the market completely packed. Since there are less than a few dozen stands, itโ€™sโ€ฆ

Kouign Amann at Le Grenier a Pain

Today is election day in France, and la Rรฉpublique has the choice of re-electing the current President, or ushering in a new one. For people who usually have a lot of opinions, my French friends arenโ€™t all that enthused about either one of the fellows. One is hoping to come into office, promising to represent Changement, and the other came into office five years ago,โ€ฆ
