The Chin Up, and Breuckelen Distilling

Whenever Iโ€™m in New York, I have a few drinking buddies all ready to hit a few bars for cocktails with me. One friend who I used to work with at Chez Panisse is at the top of that list and we both like our cocktails the same way: Not on the sweet side. So when we go out, we scan barย menus to find drinksโ€ฆ

John Brown Smokehouse

I remember being dรฉรงu (disappointed) a few years back when I signed up to go to a barbecue dinner in Paris and I was super-excited to attend. But instead of being served platters of long-cooked meat, I found myself being handed aย plate of a piece of beef cooked on aย regular grill: Iโ€™d forgotten that the word โ€œbarbecueโ€ in Europe usually means โ€œgrilled.โ€ (Shhhh. Mansoura

One of the appeals of Brooklyn is the rich ethnic mix of cultures, cuisines, and traditions, that is somewhat of a microcosm of America. Many of our grandparents, includingย mine, arrived on Ellis Island and assimilated to life in America in New York City. And it still remains a lively, if sometimes uncomfortable, mix of upscale, downscale, rich, poor, happy, angry, frustrated, and content. Butย everybodyโ€™s gottaโ€ฆ

Upcoming New York City Events in December

Coming up, Iโ€™ll be doing two events in New York City. At both Iโ€™ll be signing books, and you can take care of some of that holiday shopping. Come say hi! On Saturday, Decemberย 5th, the fine folks at The Brooklyn Kitchen (100 Frost Street, Brooklyn) will be hosting a get-together and booksigning at their store. Bourbon Butterscotch Sauce

I donโ€™t like cliques (unless Iโ€™m part of it, of courseโ€ฆ) and I have to say, one that Iโ€™m happy to be a part of is the brotherhood, and sisterhood, of ice cream makers. I wasnโ€™t the first person to write a book, The Perfect Scoop, about making ice cream. But it landed on the cusp of something that was happening: People were rediscovering iceโ€ฆ

Butter & Scotch Bakery and Bar, and Rock & Rye Milkshake recipe

[As of September 2020, Butter & Scotch has closed its doors. Fortunately, they are still in the baking business and their treats are available at their online shop.] With over 1200 pastry shops, Paris has no shortage of places to satisfy oneโ€™s sweet cravings. That is, unless itโ€™s after 8pm, when all the bakery shelves are wiped clean and they close up for the nightโ€ฆ.

Ice & Vice

[Update: Due to the coronavirus, sadly Ice & Vice is shutting their doors November 2020.] One of the bestย parts of summer in the U.S.ย is heading out for ice cream on a warm evening. Even if youโ€™re someone like me, that always has a freezerful of ice cream, itโ€™s funย to head out somewhere and join others who are cooling down, lapping up cones on the streetsโ€ฆ

Liddabit Sweets

I was trying to explain to my French other-halfย what an incubator was. In America, we donโ€™t use the term just for babies, but we use it to describe groups that exist in placesย like San Francisco, where new ideas are born from creative minds which are often the result of thinking โ€œoutside the box.โ€ There are the tech giants, like Apple, Facebook, and Google, thatย started thatโ€ฆ

Ovenly

Sometimes when Iโ€™m doing events, such asย meet-ups and booksignings, people will kindly bring treats for me to eat. Itโ€™s always nice when people think of me, and my sweet tooth, when Iโ€™m on the road.ย However thereโ€™s nothing worse than trying to carry on a back-and-forthย withย someone who is chewing on food when youโ€™re not doing the same. It just doesnโ€™t work. My least favorite moment whenโ€ฆ
