Zabarโ€™s

Iโ€™m always complaining that in Paris, you can never find what youโ€™re looking for. Letโ€™s say you need shoelaces that are 110 cm. Youโ€™ll go to the shoelace department at the enormous BHV department store and on the wall of shoelaces, theyโ€™ll be 90cmโ€ฆ100cmโ€ฆ105cmโ€ฆ109cmโ€ฆ111cm. But 110cm? Of course not. So here I am in New York presumably the greatest shopping city in the world. Andโ€ฆ

Cafe des Musees

(UPDATE: Cafรฉ des Musรฉes changed owners in the Fall of 2014 and Iโ€™ve heard mixed reports from locals and visitors. I havenโ€™t been back since the change of chef andย ownership but from all reports, it is a completely different restaurant and you should not expect to find the same dishes as noted in this post.) Located a few blocks north of the historic place desโ€ฆ

8 Tips for Choosing and Using Olive Oil

A recent post on Marinated Feta elicited some interesting comments and questions about olive oil. Here are a few tips that I follow when buying, using, and storing oil: 1. Keep olive oil out of the light. You may haveย spent a lot of money on your oil and you want to look at those pretty labels lined up on your countertop. But light destroys oliveโ€ฆ

What Is Gelato?

How does one explain, in a few short paragraphs, something thatโ€™s such a critical part of Italian life, like gelato? If youโ€™ve spent any time in Italy, itโ€™s hard to look anywhere and not see an Italian balancing a cono di gelato in someoneโ€™s hand. Everyone, from suave businessmen in Armani suits to grandmothers chatting on a stroll with friendsโ€”all eat gelato. Like the concentratedโ€ฆ

Great Addresses for Food and Eating in San Francisco

I was trying to explain to a French friend what a โ€˜foodieโ€™ is, and he was looking at me like I was nuts. I guess when you live in a country thatโ€™s full of people that live to eat, the concept of people not into eating is a bit odd. So, for lack of a better introduction, here are my โ€˜foodieโ€™ addresses for places thatโ€ฆ

Austin, Texas

Before I high-tail it outta Austin, I thought Iโ€™d share a few things I ate while here. The tour of ice cream shops around town will have to wait until Iโ€™m back home, but there were plenty of other things to sampleโ€ฆ. Austin is the hip townโ€ฆor city, in Texas. I say โ€˜townโ€™ because it feels more like a big town than the capital ofโ€ฆ

3 San Francisco Ethnic Eateries

You can find good Vietnamese food in Paris, and there are a couple of nice addresses for Chinese food as well, but if thereโ€™s a good Korean bbq in the City of Light, that kalbi has yet to singe my lips. When I come back to San Francisco, people ask me if Iโ€™m interested in trying the newest, hottest, most au courant restaurants in townโ€ฆ.

Bi-Rite Creamery

I am such an idiot. I wonโ€™t tell you who, but years back, someone with a thriving restaurant on 18th Street in San Francisco alerted me to a great business opportunity nearby. Food-related, of course. I passed, and now the area is the culinary destination in the Bay Area. (Aside from the taqueria on Church Street across from the Afewayโ€ฆ) Although I missed the proverbialโ€ฆ
