The Rules: Bringing Food Home From France

โ€œCan I bring that back?โ€ Iโ€™ve been asked that question a lot by visitors to France, wondering if they can bring certain items home. Here are some articles and posts about what can and canโ€™t be brought back into the United States: โ€“Think Twice Before Stuffing Your Suitcase (USA Today) โ€“Transportation Security Administration โ€“Importing Food Products into the United States (FDA) โ€“Travelers Bringing Food Intoโ€ฆ

Favorite Paris Restaurants

Here are some of my favorite places to eat in Paris. This is not an exhaustive list, and Iโ€™ve mentioned many of my other top picks here on the site, so you can use the search engine to find them. And thereโ€™s others on My Paris page here as well. Several of these are also not fancy places. Sure, many people come to Paris forโ€ฆ

Meat? No Meat?

When I was young and had no deadlines or mortgages (or a blog), I was footloose-and-fancy-free right after I finished college. So just about the day after graduation, I hitched on a backpack and headed to Europe. In was the 80โ€™s and it was the thing to do. As I traversed the continent, I met scores of other kids my age doing the same thingโ€ฆ

Pay Dirt!

Why is it when you order French Fries, a disappointing majority of the time they come out in a limp heap, underbaked, greasy, and soft. Does anybody really like their fries that way? Anyone? (start rant) I always want to take the plate back into the kitchen, present them to the cook, and ask why they didnโ€™t leave them to cook until deep-golden brown andโ€ฆ

Inside The KitchenAid Factory

โ€œYouโ€™re going to flip out.โ€That was the message I got from a representative and friend from KitchenAid when he found out I was finally going to visit their factory. It was a visit Iโ€™ve been waiting years to make. Iโ€™d been meaning to visit the KitchenAid factory ever they brought up the idea to me a few years ago, asking me to give a bakingโ€ฆ

Nealโ€™s Yard Dairy in London

Disneyland is often called โ€˜The Happiest Place on Earthโ€™. I donโ€™t know about that. For me, Nealโ€™s Yard Dairy is that place. Iโ€™d been anxious (well, more than anxious, practically hysterical) to visit them in London ever since I first tasted their cheeses, which are imported by my gal-pals Peggy Smith and Sue Conley at Cowgirl Creamery in the San Francisco bay area. London Calledโ€ฆSo I Went!

With the Eurostar, London is just a 2 ยฝ hour train from the Paris gare du Nord. Why wouldnโ€™t you go for a weekend? I guess I could think of a million reasons why I havenโ€™t been to London but none are very compelling. When an email from some friends who live in Hawaii announced they were coming for the weekend (which involved several flightโ€ฆ

LA is a Helluva Place

Way back when, hotelier Leona Helmsley was charged with tax evasion and she became Public Enemy #1. A clever ad campaign lured guests back with the lineโ€ฆ โ€œSay what you want, she runs a helluva place!โ€ Thatโ€™s the way I feel about Los Angeles. I donโ€™t know why, but I used to harbor suspicions about the place, that it was all just a big phonyโ€ฆ

Santa Monica Farmerโ€™s Market

Tiny little heads of cauliflower, no bigger than a dolls-head. These were the most colorful Iโ€™d ever seen in magnificent shades of vivid purple and deep orange. Although America is known as the land of HUGE food, these tiny baby carrots are tender and very sweet. My first week as a cook at Chez Panisse, I spent a few hours peeling a case of themโ€ฆonlyโ€ฆ
