Les Tomates

The French have a lot of protests and manifestations. Some of the issues they march for are a bit of a reach and we roll our eyes. And itโ€™s annoying when the trains and other forms of transport go on strike and you need to get somewhere. But on the other hand, itโ€™s good that they feel strongly about certain issues, enough to hit theโ€ฆ

Cookware Shops in Paris

Paris is a mecca for cooks, and folks come here from around the world to stock up on French and specialty cookware. Many of the shops are clustered around the Les Halles area, where for many years restaurateurs shopped at the giant market there for produce and other comestibles, as well as professional kitchenware. Although the market is gone, many of those stores exist andโ€ฆ

The Barbes Market

Every once in a while there are contests in Paris to decide who makes the best croissant, a hot new restaurant list get published somewhere, or a market way on the other side of Paris that supposedly has great onions grown in the same soil where Louis the XIV once took a squat, becomes a โ€œmust visitโ€. Itโ€™s pretty encouraging to see and hear aboutโ€ฆ

10 Things to Do If Youโ€™re Stuck in Paris

Yesterday, I was passing through the Place de lโ€™Opรฉra, and saw this mob outside the Air France office. And the line snaked around the block. I took a picture and went home to happily finish packing for my trip, which was going to start tomorrow. I must be living in a volcanic cloud of my own, and indeed, when I woke up, there was anโ€ฆ

Rue Montorgueil and Les Halles, Paris

You might not remember the days before the internet, but when we used to travel somewhere, weโ€™d ask a friend to scribble down a list of suggestions. And weโ€™d often be asked to do the same in return. Then when computers became widely used, other โ€˜favoritesโ€™ lists started circulating, including suggestions posted in online forums and in blogs. So think of this list as myโ€ฆ

French Onion Dip

A few weeks ago, I made plans to meet my friend Terresa in Pigalle, to check out a new รฉpicerie (specialty food shop). I donโ€™t know if youโ€™re familiar with Pigalle, but the area has a certain well-deserved โ€˜reputationโ€™ and if youโ€™re a middle-aged man walking around by yourself in the evening, casually looking in the windows of the cafรฉs and bars, donโ€™t be surprisedโ€ฆ

Community Supported Agriculture, in Paris

About a year ago, I was having supper in a friendโ€™s apartment and everything we ate was simple, and tasted really good. Heโ€™d lived on a farm near Toulouse for many years, where he worked for one of Franceโ€™s agricultural organizations. Now he lives in Paris and I was surprised when he told me that the onions we were eating on the tart heโ€™d madeโ€ฆ

Comtรฉ

Thereโ€™s sort of some rhyme and reason to my cheese-buying habits. One fromagerie might have the most amazing butter, so Iโ€™ll trek over to the place St. Paul to buy a packet of it. But if I want a round of Selles-sur-Cher, Iโ€™ll go to the fromager at the marche dโ€™Aligre who always has beautiful ones on display. For St. Nectaire and Cantal, Iโ€™ll onlyโ€ฆ

I Heart Neufchatel

Neufchรขtel got a makeover when it crossed the Atlantic, to the states, where itโ€™s used to refer to low-fat cream cheese, which bears no resemblance to true Neufchรขtel, a cheese that certainly doesnโ€™t fall anywhere near that category. The cheese is from Normandy, a region that few would argue produces the best cheeses in the world. Camembert, Livarot, and the especially creamy Brillat-Savarin are someโ€ฆ
