La Ruche qui dit Oui!

The word โ€œnonโ€ is often the response of choice in France. And while it makes for funny snickering from outsiders, chuckling at complicated and arcane bureaucracy, itโ€™s become a serious hindrance to innovation and small businesses, which have been having a particularly tough time lately. And thereโ€™s a younger generation of entrepreneurial talent, who have new ideas and are striving to be innovative and inventive,โ€ฆ

Pop-Up Booksigning in Paris

Iโ€™ll be joining the kids of Candelaria this Sunday for a Halloween Jumble Sale! The event will be taking place this Sunday, October 28th and Iโ€™ll be there from 12 to 2pm signing books. You can pick up copies of The Perfect Scoop, Ready for Dessert, and The Sweet Life in Paris. (Iโ€™m happy to sign previously purchased books as well.) There will be hardbackโ€ฆ

Disneyland Paris

Iโ€™ve lived in Paris for nearly ten years, which some folks think is a magic kingdom in itself. And although Iโ€™ve been to the Louvre, Rungis, the Musรฉe dโ€™Orsay, and the crazy-giant Tati store at Barbรจs, Iโ€™ve not been to Disneyland Paris โ€“ until now. Iโ€™d been to the one in southern California as a kid, back when Disneyland featured things we never dreamed ofโ€ฆ

Canceling Reservations in Paris

Iโ€™d arrived early this weekend at one of the โ€œhotโ€ restaurants in Paris, where I was meeting a friend for dinner, so I chatted up the barman while having a glass at the bar. Since itโ€™s one of my favorite restaurants, I asked him how things were going because I want them to succeed and continue. He replied, โ€œWell, we just had three groups ofโ€ฆ

Lโ€™ร‰picerie Breizh Cafe

Sometimes I think I am living in the wrong dรฉpartement of France. Donโ€™t get me wrong, Iโ€™m happy to be able to walk out my door and get a baguette Parisienne or a sachet of les macarons, libremente (freely). But Breton food is all the flavors I crave: buckwheat, honey, sardines, oysters, fleur de sel, seaweed, and sparkling apple cider. Oh yes, and butter. Theโ€ฆ

Philou

[UPDATE: Philou closed in 2019 and a new restaurant opened in its place, Lโ€™Angรฉlus du Canal.] I always want to put Philou in my Paris favorites list. Itโ€™s got so much going for it; a friendly staff, itโ€™s just enough out-of-the way that it attracts a good mix of mostly people who live in the neighborhood with others who come from other parts of theโ€ฆ

Jacques Genin

I first met Jacques Genin a number of years ago when he was (somewhat famously) working out of a battered storefront, on an uninteresting street deep in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. I say โ€œfamouslyโ€ because as he became quite a bit better known, many folks learning about him through Mort Rosenblumโ€™s book, Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Light and Dark. And subsequently, people startedโ€ฆ

Lโ€™evier

One of the things I absolutely insisted on in my kitchen was a huge sink. Since I spend roughly 11 to 18% of my day standing over it, considering some women spend a fortunes on tall shoes, and there are men who spend a lot of money on fancy, oversized watches โ€“ and vice versa โ€“ I thought I was entitled to a big sinkโ€ฆ.

Rochouxโ€™s Hazelnut Praline Paste

I probably shouldnโ€™t admit this, but I rarely go over to the Saint Germain des Prรจs area much. I know, itโ€™s a popular destination for many, but if I head over there, itโ€™s usually for one thing, and one thing only: Chocolate. Most of the chocolatiers are clustered over there because, well, if you can afford to live over there, thatโ€™s where most of theโ€ฆ
