West Country Girl

[UPDATE: As of early summer 2017, West Country Girl has closed.] Thereโ€™s a new girl (and guy) in town. And she owns a small crรชperie which is one of my favorite little addresses in Paris and worth a visit, in spite what some might feel is a relatively obscure address. To me, though, itโ€™s not all that obscure because Iโ€™ve forged a pretty clear pathโ€ฆ

Apple Spice Cake

Recently I ate at one of those small neighborhood restaurants whose fame spreads beyond the quartier and people come from other neighborhoods, as well as from other countries, to eat at because it is trรจs reputรฉ. Le Repaire de Cartouche (99 rue Amelot) is one of those restaurants in Paris. Itโ€™s known for very good food and an especially compelling wine list. The prices arenโ€™tโ€ฆ

Community Supported Agriculture, in Paris

About a year ago, I was having supper in a friendโ€™s apartment and everything we ate was simple, and tasted really good. Heโ€™d lived on a farm near Toulouse for many years, where he worked for one of Franceโ€™s agricultural organizations. Now he lives in Paris and I was surprised when he told me that the onions we were eating on the tart heโ€™d madeโ€ฆ

Saint-Marcellin Cheese

If you go to Lyon, youโ€™ll find Saint Marcellin pretty much everywhere. Itโ€™s the best-known cheese from that region, and the user friendly-sized disks are inevitably piled high at each and every cheese shop you step in to. Locals bake them at home and slide the warm disks onto salads, and Iโ€™ve not been to a restaurant in that city that didnโ€™t have Saint Marcellinโ€ฆ

A Great Kouign Amann, in Paris

Iโ€™m not going to say a thing, because Iโ€™m certain I did the same thing back in the day. But a lot of people who are en route to Paris ask me where they can find things like bouillabaisse, a true salade Niรงoise, or Kig ha farz, and when I answer, โ€œYou canโ€™tโ€, they either donโ€™t believe me, or get irked because they think Iโ€™mโ€ฆ

Restaurant Write-Up Policy

Occasionally I will write up a restaurant on the site. These are not traditional restaurant reviews; I donโ€™t visit three times, I donโ€™t take notes, I donโ€™t go in disguises, and Iโ€™m not qualified to critique certain cuisines and wine lists. I write about food and travel but am not a restaurant critic. When I write up a restaurant itโ€™s because I think itโ€™s aโ€ฆ

Paris Gastronomy Tour

Doing a culinary tour in Paris is always fun, because not only do I get to meet some new people and make new friends (importantโ€ฆsince the old ones keep deserting me), but I get to revisit my favorite places in Paris. And this week, we made a detour in Lyon as well. So there was a lot more to see, and eatโ€ฆ Lyon is aโ€ฆ

Where to Find the Best Steak Frites in Paris

Alec Lobrano has been writing about the food in Paris for over two decades, and was the Paris correspondent for Gourmet magazine. When his book, Hungry for Paris came out, I immediately opened to page one and read it cover-to-cover. Heโ€™s one of the best food writers of our generation and each chapter tells the story of one of his favorite restaurants in Paris. Andโ€ฆ

Puerto Cacao

I keep a piece of paper near my front door. On it are places in Paris that I want to visit. When I hear about a place that sounds interesting, on the list it goes. Unfortunately, it seems as soon as I cross one off, a few more get added. And the list gets longer and longer and longer and longer andโ€ฆ One particular spotโ€ฆ
