Health Care Tips for Travelers to France

I recently spoke at Bloom Where Youโ€™re Planted, a program intended to introduce newcomers to the sometimes perplexing differences of life abroad. I stayed after my talk for a seminar on French health care. While I was familiar with some of the information, some of you might not be, especially those who are traveling to Paris. This post includes numbers to call and places toโ€ฆ

The A-Z Guide to French Food

When I was taking pastry classes at Ecole Lenรดtre years ago, they had a shop at the school filled with all sorts of great professional baking equipment. Aside from the room where the croissants were freshly-baked (and handed out) every hour, it was my favorite place at the school. PIled up on the shelf was also a stack of slender books: The A-Z of Frenchโ€ฆ

Vintage Cookbooks in Paris at le Bouquiniste Gastronomie

During a recent book event in Paris at a local bouquiniste, I met up with Alain Huchet, who sells an extraordinary selection of vintage cookbooks, menus, and gravures, all relating to the pleasures of food and wine. Naturally, the selection is heavily tilted toward French gastronomy, and I was a kid in a confiserie when I began rifling through the stacks of books. Iโ€™ve seenโ€ฆ

Bernachon Chocolate

For my birthday, back in December, Romain presented me with a Kalouga bar from Bernachon, handwrapped personally for me by Denise Acabo of A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or, one the best, and wackiest, candy and chocolate shops anywhere in the world. Iโ€™ve been afraid to open it since I know whatโ€™ll happen once I do. So Iโ€™ve been saving it for a special occasion, or a WTFโ€ฆ

Nomiya @ Art Home

Iโ€™m not much for trendy restaurants. And I donโ€™t really care for chefs that are trying to show-off, especially when they donโ€™t have les bourses to pull it off. I recall a particularly alarming mealโ€ฆand the bill, at the end of itโ€ฆat a very, very expensive restaurant where I was presented with half of a caramelized shallot which arrived in front of me with aโ€ฆ

The Good News andโ€ฆThe Good News

I have two bits of good news that are going to make you very, very happy. Okay, they make me happy. You, on the other hand, might not give a ratโ€™s derriรจre. One is that the bakery that makes the sesame baguette is going to stay open for an indeterminate amount of time. That means that I wonโ€™t be cut off from my Crack Baguetteโ€ฆ.

le Regime

If you want to live in France, you need to get used to people speaking their mind. Years ago when I was young and supple, Iโ€™d eat whatever I could get my hands on. And working in a restaurant, well, letโ€™s just say thatโ€™s not the best food to eat on a long-term basis. But I know all-too well about that because I was oneโ€ฆ
