Thereโ€™s sort of some rhyme and reason to my cheese-buying habits. One fromagerie might have the most amazing butter, so Iโ€™ll trek over to the place St. Paul to buy a packet of it. But if I want a round of Selles-sur-Cher, Iโ€™ll go to the fromager at the marche dโ€™Aligre who always has beautiful ones on display. For St. Nectaire and Cantal, Iโ€™ll onlyโ€ฆ

Mon Dieu! A Hospitel?

If youโ€™re into staying in odd hotels, the most unusual one in Paris is part of Hรดtel Dieu, called Hospitel. Occupying the top floor of Parisโ€™ enormous public hospital, the hotel is adjacent to Notre Dame and features one of the most beautiful hotel lobbies in the world: a sumptuous, verdant courtyard framed by a sprawl of archways. The location of the Hรดtel Dieu wasโ€ฆ

I Heart Neufchatel

Neufchรขtel got a makeover when it crossed the Atlantic, to the states, where itโ€™s used to refer to low-fat cream cheese, which bears no resemblance to true Neufchรขtel, a cheese that certainly doesnโ€™t fall anywhere near that category. The cheese is from Normandy, a region that few would argue produces the best cheeses in the world. Camembert, Livarot, and the especially creamy Brillat-Savarin are someโ€ฆ

Showgirl Cupcakes

(I recent met Bryce Corbett, who wrote A Town Like Paris, a book about his life in Paris, where he found the girl of his dreams. Since heโ€™s a terrific writer, I asked him to do a guest post, which included our visit behind-the-scenes at one of Parisโ€™ most exciting attractions. -David) There are many fringe benefits to being married to a Paris showgirl. Spanakopita Recipe

The most commonly-asked question for a certain cookbook author, aside from โ€œCan I replace the corn syrup?โ€ by a longshot, is: โ€œCan that be frozen?โ€ So the fellow in question wrote an ice cream book, knowing that Iโ€”I mean, he would get a break from being asked that question.

Le Dimanche

When I moved to France from San Francisco, I worried about what every San Franciscan worries aboutโ€” โ€œWhat am I going to do without burritos?โ€ For those who arenโ€™t familiar with San Francisco-style burritos, these bullet-shaped tummy-torpedoes are rice, beans, salsa, and meat all rolled up in a giant flour tortilla and eaten steaming hot. I donโ€™t want to antagonize the burrito folks, but beingโ€ฆ

Pimping My Crรชpes

Turn on the television any night in France and chances are excellent that youโ€™ll land on a program, held in a brightly-lit studio, where celebrities, authors, and other French luminaries mingle, chat, and talk about issuesโ€”or whatever they feel like. For some reason, though, they donโ€™t run a banner at the bottom while the person is talking, like they do incessantly on American television. Andโ€ฆ
