La Ferme de Viltain

Itโ€™s not a drag to be in Paris in August. In fact, those who stay in town always say the same thing โ€“ โ€œThis is the best time of year to be in Paris.โ€ (Or, โ€œWouldnโ€™t it be incroyableย if it was like this all year?โ€) Even though Paris is a lot smaller, imagineย if 85% of the people left New York City or San Francisco inโ€ฆ

Bistrot Paul Bert

Shortly after I had arrived in Paris, I was havingย dinner with Romain at Bistrot Paul Bert. Nearby, a couple wasย speaking English and when I struck up a conversation with them, I asked how they knew about the restaurant. They mentioned they saw it on a โ€œBest ofโ€ list inย a culinary/travel magazine. So it wasnโ€™t a secret back then, nor it is now. And with goodโ€ฆ

The Marche dโ€™Aligre in Paris

When I moved to Paris, I didnโ€™t liveย far from the Marchรฉ dโ€™Aligre. Not known for having a great sense of direction or distance, I didnโ€™t know how close I was and would take the bus home, loaded down with my purchases from the market. There was a closer market in the Bastille, but the Aligre market was especially bustling, and had an energy and dynamicโ€ฆ

Panifica bakery

UPDATE: Panifica has closed and a new bakery (thatโ€™s good!) has opened in its place. I used to cross Paris to buy a loaf of bread. That was when I was more of a dรฉbutant and kept a list of bakeries that I wanted to visit, and Iโ€™d make it a point to check off as many as I could, to try their bread. Butโ€ฆ

Tawlet Souk el Tayeb, Lebanese food in Paris

One of the great regrets I had in life was when I went to Beirut and didnโ€™t go to the Tawlet Souk el Tayeb, a culinary project supportingย local farmers, cooks, and producers. Thereโ€™s also a weekly farmersโ€™ market, classes and meals. Because my schedule was so packed on my trip, as much as I tried, I didnโ€™t make it. A few years later โ€“ asโ€ฆ

A Visit to Jean-Charles Rochoux Chocolate Shop in Paris (Video)

I snuck my way into the workshop of master Paris chocolatier Jean-Charles Rochoux. When asked which is the best chocolate shop in Paris, itโ€™s hard to pick just one, but his boutique is at the top of my short list. Each chocolate is hand-crafted in the kitchen just below the shop, where a small team of chocolatiers and Monsieur Rochoux dip, sculpt, mold, and enrobeโ€ฆ

La Bourse et la Vie

[UPDATE: The restaurant has changed its format offering a fixed-price meal (currently โ‚ฌ67) that includes starters and main courses, but not desserts or sides. I havenโ€™t been back since they instituted the change.] When Daniel Rose opened his first restaurant, Spring, it was a small, seasonally driven restaurant on an unremarkable street in theย 9th arrondissement. Word quickly spread about the talented chef, who helped fuelย aย revolutionโ€ฆ

Mon Eclair

[Update: Mon ร‰clair closed in the spring of 2018.] I was recently part of a panel on France24 television toย debate the subject: โ€œThe argument over French cuisine.โ€ย Rather than being a debate, though, it was more question-and-answer session once the cameras were rolling. But beforehand, the four of us on the panelย had a very lively discussion in the lobby about the subject, which at one point,โ€ฆ
