As holiday thanks readers, through the generosity of Le Creuset, I’m giving away a six piece set of classic French cookware in cherry red. This colorful set goes from oven to table effortlessly and includes a large 5 1/2-quart round covered French oven, a 2 1/4-quart covered saucier, a 10-inch square skillet grill, and an 8- x 11-inch rectangular roasting dish.

This time of year traditionally food bloggers get together to raise money for charity.

So I’d like to offer these charities up as places where you can give this holiday season. No donation is required to enter for a chance to get this fantastic set of cookware. But just the other day, I was watching television on the devastation in many parts of the world, and was sitting in my heated apartment with a refrigerator full of food, and realized how fortunate I am.

It’s easy to forget or to click away to something more entertaining when we see a natural disaster or a face filled with misery. But instead I sat down at my desk and sent a donation to Doctors Without Borders, an international aid organization. It took just a few minutes and no matter how much you can contribute, any amount would be greatly appreciated.

Five charities that I would like to point out that could use help this year:

Doctors Without Borders: This organization provides urgent medical care to people in areas struck by emergencies.

Share Our Strength: Carol at Alinea at Home is starting her annual campaign for Share Our Strength to help feel hungry kids.

101 Cookbooks Kiva Group: This organization helps distribute loans to small businesses in underdeveloped countries and you can loan money to help a specific individual begin a new life.

Stoves for Darfur: This is an amazing initiative started by a young American teenager to provide low-cost stoves for women who normally gather wood, walking at great lengths and often getting assaulted (or worse), just trying to feed themselves and their families.

The Smile Train: The Smile Train provides free surgical procedures to children to fix cleft palates, which gives kids around the world a reason to smile.

Although a donation isn’t required for a chance to win this fantastic set of Le Creuset cookware for your kitchen, please do consider helping out one of these charities if you possibly can this holiday season.

NOTE: The give-away has ended (see #1, below) and comments have been closed. The winner will be notified by e-mail on Christmas Day. Thanks to everyone who participated and hope you all have a terrific holiday! -dl

To Enter

1. Simply leave a comment below. When you leave a comment, please include your correct e-mail address in the field that asks for it. It will not be visible to the public there, so do not leave it in the actual comment area.

I will close comments promptly on December 24, 2010 at noon Paris time, and the person who will receive this set of cookware will be chosen by a random number generator, then contacted by e-mail on Christmas Day. Winner must respond by December 31, 2010 noon Paris time, or forfeit the cookware. No exceptions.

2. Le Creuset can only ship this set to a winner in the United States due to customs and other restrictions. (If you want to gripe about things available in the states that aren’t available elsewhere, the line begins here…) Shipping is included to all 50 states although winner is responsible for any local taxes or charges levied, if applicable.

If you live abroad and you wish to bid, you can do so only if you: 1) Have a mailing address in the US that accepts parcels, or 2) Use a mail and parcel forwarding service. If you choose to use one, you will be responsible for any and all fees, including customs, duties, and taxes that may be levied. I have no experience using one but you can find one by searching Google, using the search words “International Forward Shipping.”

3. Only one entry per person. Multiple entries will all be disqualified and you will get a lump of coal in your Christmas stocking. (Or worse.) When you enter, you agree to the delivery terms listed above. No purchase required.

4. Bonne chance! (Good luck!)

If you have good health, a dry place to sleep, food, and clean water, you have things that so many people in the world – our country, even – don’t. The charities you highlight do great work to ease the suffering and improve the lives of so many. Cheers!

    Hi David,
What a wonderful giveaway! My husband and I have been reading your blog for some time now… we’re casual Parisians, spending about a month in the city every few years, and we love catching up with what’s happening in the city by reading your reviews and anecdotes (I laugh every time you mention how the French have turned cutting in line into an artform.) The recipes are fabulous, too- I can’t tell you how many rave reviews the Irish shortbread recipe has gotten to date, and that’s only when we decide to share it with others ;)
Please enter me in the giveaway… my email is lamontmartraise@gmail.com
    Happy holidays!

Your blog brings me back to happy years spent in Paris as a student in the early 90s. Doctors without Borders is a fabulous organization; we give to them every year to help them continue their work that is, sadly, needed as much as ever.

    • Wynne

I am moving out to go to college in 2 weeks, this would be just perfect!!!!

    • Clementine

Though I fully support all of the worthy causes discussed above, I am a firm believer in seeing the need that surrounds you every day and making a difference in the lives of people in your neighborhood. As the weather snaps colder and colder here in D.C. that need is becoming increasingly apparent and is where I choose to focus my giving.

As for the Le Creuset, I would LOVE to nestle these beauties into my kitchen – I know they would love it there!

    • Emily

I love your blog and I love Le Creuset – this would be amazing!

    • Victoria (District Chocoholic)

I’d have to unload some chocolate to make room for this in my kitchen. I’m OK with that.

    • Andrea Rogers

Thanks for sharing these worthy causes. Happy holidays!

    • Stephen Whitlock

The best beouf bourguignon I ever had was ladled out of Le Creuset, so I’ve great affection for the brand. I dream of having a full set for myself.

    • Vivian

Great causes, and wonderful way to promote them on your blog! I also firmly support charity:water as an organization.

    Happy holidays!

    • Susan Lynn

Is this your way of making up for all the cookbooks you’ve forcibly (twist my arm!) made me purchase this year? In all seriousness, I am unable to donate my time this year to the homeless shelter my family goes to to serve Christmas Day meals and this reminder to donate to a good cause is perfect! Thank you David and here’s to another year of full fridges and wonderful articles coming from you.

    • Chavernay

Your recipes for daily items are what I use most. During the summer I went through most of the ice cream recipes.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, these causes, and the set of Le Creuset. Happy holidays across the ocean!

    • Erin

Thanks for the post and merry christmas to you!

    • Anne

I donate already to MSF, but I agree they are a great charity and they do a good job. I love red enamel cookware already and I can’t afford Le Crueset – my brother’s giving me a red enamel french oven and an ice-cream maker for Christmas. Love Aldi.

    • Walter

Great causes! Here’s to sharing and caring.

    • Connie Martin

Great idea for a giveaway….and one can never have too much cookware!

    • Estelle

wow – about a billion comments already! Its kind of funny when you realise that you think that you are the only one looking at a particular webpage in the world, when really, chances are there’s someone else typing something into this box at exactly the same time as me…

There is something sexy about enamel cookware. Merry Christmas from Australia.

    • Laurel

This is truly an amazing giveaway, and an amazing sentiment to go along with it. It’s definitely important to count your blessings this time of the year – and winning this set would be quite the blessing indeed! Thanks for the opportunity.

    • Amy

This would be fantastic! And thanks for highlighting many worthy causes.

    • Ashleigh

My mom has a set of Le Creuset pans that she bought before I was born. I grew up on meals prepared in them and they’re still around and used almost daily! Built to last for sure.

    • wizzythestick

Giveaways are fantastic. Even if you don’t actually win any it’s always nice to dream and that’s just what this is a dream cookery set.

    • Alexandra

I had a similar set years ago that was stolen. It, too, was red.

And I’m a fan of those charities – hard to choose! Even during tough times, I give what I can. Even if it’s five dollars one year (when I’m a student) and one hundred the next. It adds up and makes a difference!

    • Amanda Kolkovich

Merry Christmas! Thanks for encouraging others to give.

    • Kerry

    Mmm…le creuset…

    • Anita

What a great idea! Happy holidays.
