Asparagus Mimosa

I came to the conclusion a while back that there isnโ€™t a vegetableย thatโ€™s not better roasted. I backtracked a bit, not just because that idea was too many double-negatives in one sentence, but thought that peas probably arenโ€™t better roasted. I havenโ€™t tried them; the idea of tiny peas being reduced to a shriveled bbโ€™s doesnโ€™t sound appealing to me. And while I know aโ€ฆ

Oven-Roasted Asparagus

Recently Iโ€™ve come out as a non-steamed vegetable eater. I worked with an amazing Asian food expert who hated Japanese food, saying it wasnโ€™t sexy, pointing the blame on a reliance on steaming. He also said they eat pollywogs, which he followed by saying, โ€œWho eats pollywogs?โ€ Well, I donโ€™t. At least not intentionally. (Although Iโ€™m sure I ingested some pond water in my youth,โ€ฆ

Lunch at Google

Iโ€™ve had a lot of interesting experiences on this book tour, from taking in all the gorgeous produce at farmersโ€™ markets, from San Francisco to Washington D.C,, to having someone tell me that he was proud of โ€œmy peopleโ€ for the book I wrote. Wasnโ€™t too sure who โ€œmy peopleโ€ are. At first I thought it was mes amis franรงais, but then I realized itโ€ฆ

Kylie Kwong at Billy Kwong

I crave Asian flavors, which became apparent on a couple of occasions this month. For one thing, it seems that I want to add chiles and fresh ginger to everything. Here is Sydney, Australia, where so much of the food feels Asian-influenced โ€“ clean flavors, fresh ingredients often cooked quickly over high heat (cooks using fiery woks always seem to be โ€œattackingโ€ the food, simultaneouslyโ€ฆ

The Malakoff

I know the Swiss are famous for their discretion and secrecy, but this is getting ridiculous. When I first saw Malakoff on a menu, I thought it was for Charlotte Malakoff, a classic (and hardly made-anymore) French dessert which is a round of chocolate mousse held together by ladyfingers. When I saw it on several menus in Switzerland, I thought it odd that it wasโ€ฆ
