A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or is Open Again!

[UPDATE: As of September 2022, after 46 years, Madame Acabo has retired and closed her shop in Paris.] When a gas explosionย that happened in the basementย destroyed her shop, many couldnโ€™t believe that one of their favorite chocolate shops in Paris was gone, including Denise Acabo herself. I visited her shortly afterward and she was in shock, missing her store โ€“ but most of all, missingโ€ฆ

[UPDATE: As of September 2022, after 46 years, Madame Acabo has retired and closed her shop in Paris. Itโ€™s now a branch of the cookie and chocolate shop of Alain Ducasse.] If youโ€™d ever stepped into A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or, the candy and chocolate shop located just down the hill from the Moulin Rouge windmill, near Montmartre, it wouldnโ€™t have taken you long to know youโ€ฆ

Shameless Groveling

Alright, folks. Weโ€™re about halfway through Menu for Hope 6 and weโ€™re almost at the $20,000 mark. Thanks to all of you who contributed to this incredibly worthy cause! However being an overachiever (in spite of what a therapist, or my editor, might say), I think we can do better. Like, a whole lot better. So just to remind you, hereโ€™s a list of aโ€ฆ

Paris Gastronomy Tour

Doing a culinary tour in Paris is always fun, because not only do I get to meet some new people and make new friends (importantโ€ฆsince the old ones keep deserting me), but I get to revisit my favorite places in Paris. And this week, we made a detour in Lyon as well. So there was a lot more to see, and eatโ€ฆ Lyon is aโ€ฆ

Bernachon Chocolate

For my birthday, back in December, Romain presented me with a Kalouga bar from Bernachon, handwrapped personally for me by Denise Acabo of A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or, one the best, and wackiest, candy and chocolate shops anywhere in the world. Iโ€™ve been afraid to open it since I know whatโ€™ll happen once I do. So Iโ€™ve been saving it for a special occasion, or a WTFโ€ฆ

A Visit to Bernachon Chocolate

Jean-Charles Rochoux has perhaps the tiniest chocolate shop in Paris, located on an unassuming side street off the Rue de Rennes. Itโ€™s hard to see and easy to miss if youโ€™re not looking for it. But what causes most passers-by to stop are the window displays, filled with intricately-sculpted statues and figures, crafted entirely of chocolate. M. Rochoux spent many years in the workshop ofโ€ฆ

A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or: The Best Candy Shop in Paris

Forget Catherine Deneuve and Carole Bouquet. The most photographed and revered woman in Paris is Denise Acabo. With her braided pig-tails, necktie, and crisply-pleated kilt, Denise is the sweetest woman in Paris. Her shop, A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or, has an ethereal selection of artisan confections and chocolates from France and whenever I go, I invariably find something new to try, something tasty, something that is soโ€ฆ
