Lockdown in Paris โ€“ plus some easy recipes for kids

Hello, Emily here. We are now on day 27 of official lock-down in Paris and day 32 since we decided to stay home with the kids. With other cities and countries also implementing stricter social distancing measures, I thought I would share our routine, favorite recipes and ways to pass the time, and hopefully pick up some ideas from you in the comments below! โ€“Emilyโ€ฆ

Salted Caramel Cream Cheese Swirl Brownies

A few years ago, a favorite bakery in Paris near where I lived was offering brownies. The baker gave me one to taste and although I was happy they were expanding their repertoire outside of their borders (actually, many French pastries are influenced from other cultures), the plain, somewhat dry brownies werenโ€™t doing it for me. They didnโ€™t understand that a brownie is best whenโ€ฆ

Ovenly

Sometimes when Iโ€™m doing events, such asย meet-ups and booksignings, people will kindly bring treats for me to eat. Itโ€™s always nice when people think of me, and my sweet tooth, when Iโ€™m on the road.ย However thereโ€™s nothing worse than trying to carry on a back-and-forthย withย someone who is chewing on food when youโ€™re not doing the same. It just doesnโ€™t work. My least favorite moment whenโ€ฆ

Salty, Deep-Dark Chocolate Brownies

When I was in Brooklyn a few months back doing a booksigning with the lovely folks from The Brooklyn Kitchen, a friendly woman came up to me bearing a box of treats from her bakery. I donโ€™t like to eat in front of people, because, frankly, no one wants to meet up with an author while he is shoving pastries in his mouth. And inโ€ฆ

How to Line a Baking Pan with Aluminum Foil

One of the best ways to ensure that baked goods will come out of a pan, especially sweet treats that tend to have sticky edges, it to line a baking pan with aluminum foil. Heleneโ€™s Brownies

The French do a lot of baked goods very well. if youโ€™ve been to Paris, you donโ€™t need me to tell you that with over 1300 bakeries in Paris, itโ€™s not hard to find a pastry or baked good on every block that will be more satisfying than you can imagine. One of the rare baked goods that the French havenโ€™t quite mastered are lesโ€ฆ

Dave and Kateโ€™s Chocolate Brownies

One thing you may not know about me โ€“ after blogging for twenty years, you thought you knew everything about me, didnโ€™t you? โ€“ was that the Hepburns were my neighbors growing up. They were extremely nice people, always smiling and very pleasant. While Katherine wasnโ€™t in the โ€˜hood, it was her brother and his wife who lived just down the street. If you grewโ€ฆ

Gluten-Free Brownies

One of the nifty things about a blog is that you can easily revisit recipes and make revisions, while learning more about baking, and sharing those discoveries, as you go. When I wrote Ready for Dessert, I was able to update my favorite recipes, many created over a decade ago, and I had fun including the changes Iโ€™d made over the years.

Chocolate Mint Brownies

I know Iโ€™m just starting here, but before you and I go any further, I just have to say one thing about these brownies: Theyโ€™re pretty insane. I made these brownies about fifteen years ago and found it patiently waiting in the back of my recipe files. And giving it a read-through, it all came flooding back to me and I was struck with theโ€ฆ
