Apple Calvados Cake

This seasonย saw a particularly excellent crop ofย cookbooks come to the forefront. But one that stood out for me wasย The London Cookbook by Aleksandra Crapanzano. When my copy came in the mail, I opened up the stately, deep blue cover, which revealed enticing pages of spectacularly simple, fresh food, the kinds I like, that are being cooked in London today. Spiced Carrots with Freekeh and Labneh,โ€ฆ

One thing that seems to cross international lines with successย is baking. I never visit a country without sampling their baking. I visit bakeries, and enjoy everything from French croissants and hearty German breads, to Indianย naan breads and bagels in Brooklyn, Montreal, and Jerusalem. Here in France, just after the new year, the windows of pastry shops are lined with all sizes of Galettes des Rois,โ€ฆ

Apple Date Cake with Salted Caramel Glaze

Itโ€™s been a turbulent week and I went into my usual default mode: I baked something. Iโ€™d been planning on sharing an apple cake recipe with you, having cooked up some apples and bought some dates in preparation. But one morning I awoke very early after a fitful night of sleep andย started pitting dates, in the early hours of the day, before the sun cameโ€ฆ

Olive Oil Muffins

This pastย Easter, I had brunch with my family in New York at Maialino. I think we are all on the same wavelength about brunch (and about facing other people early in the morning) because we sat down at the civilized hour of 2pm. After we all ordered what we wanted and we also addedย a basket of pastries for us to share. Before the waiter walkedโ€ฆ

Cherry Poppy Seed Cake

With spring around the corner, all thoughts are turning to fruit, while we wait for stone fruits to arrive. Nectarines, peaches, plums and apricots will soon be at the markets, usually led by cherries, which are often the first to make an appearance. I was leafing through Sweeter Off the Vine, by Yossy Arefi, a book dedicated to using fruit year-round, from squash, pumpkin andโ€ฆ

Cheesecake

One thing that surprises people is how much French people, even with a tempting barrage of รฉclairs, macarons, and pain au chocolat on every street, loveย gรขteau au fromage, or as itโ€™s commonly called: le cheesecake. (Not to be confused with le cheese, which is a cheeseburger.) But itโ€™s a no brainer since French people like cheese and they like cake. So why not combine theโ€ฆ

Cranberry Upside Down Cake

I haveย to eat fruit every day. If I donโ€™t, I wither away psychologically. When I was in New York for a while this winter, it was tough because there werenโ€™tย a lot of fruits available. I like apples and pears very much, but local pears had finished and while an apple a day may keep the doctor away, I needed something a little more exciting toโ€ฆ

Coffee Cake

A few years back, all of us elderly ladies and gents who were blogging for a while were suddenly surprised (and delighted) at a group of young โ€˜uns, in their teenage years, who up and started food blogs. And let me tell you, itโ€™s really nice to see young people doing something worthwhile with their time โ€” like cooking and baking, for example. My introductionโ€ฆ

Dulce de Leche Cheesecake

Sometimes when I write posts for the blog, I write so fast that my mind can barely keep up with my fingers. (Hence the occasional frequent typo.) Ideas fly into my head and I literally have to jump up from my chair and make them. Such was the case with this Dulce de Leche Cheesecake recipe, which combines two of everybodyโ€™s favorite things: cream cheeseโ€ฆ
