Far From the Tree: Apple-Pear Cocktail

The other day I was thinking of cocktails that were fall and winter-friendly. Calvados (apple brandy) of course is always in season, but I also had a bottle of spiced pear liqueur from St. George Spirits in California on hand that has a lovely pear flavor mingled with a bouquet of spices, that Iโ€™ve been meaning to incorporate into a cocktail. I had a hunchโ€ฆ

French Apple Tart (Tarte normande)

Itโ€™s the season for apple tarts,ย Fall,ย when the biggest bountyย of apples shows up at the market. Iโ€™ve had to learn about all sorts of other varieties of applesย since the ones available in France differ from the ones in the United States that I was used to. But itโ€™s been a wonderful journey of discovery and Iโ€™ve found unusual varieties that were one day, abundant at theโ€ฆ

Kir Normand

Almost everyone knows what a Kir Royal is; a flute of crรจme de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) and Champagne or sparkling wine. But in Normandy and Brittany, the drink takes a decidedly regional turn, and becomes a Kir Normandy if made with Calvados (apple brandy), or Kir Breton, if made with Breton apple brandy, known as Lambig.

Drinking French Bar Box

I was delighted that so many people were interested in setting up a French bar in advance of the publication of Drinking French and have been asked what liquors and spirits to get. So Iโ€™ve teamed up with Slope Cellars wine and spirits shop in New York City to release a Drinking French Bar Box. The Drinking French Bar Box includes a bottle of Oldโ€ฆ

Making French Butter and Camembert de Normandie at Isigny Ste-Mere

I never miss an opportunity to โ€œgo to the source,โ€ so to speak. And in France, itโ€™s sometimes just a train ride away. Barely an hour by high-speed train from Paris is Normandy, and itโ€™s bucolic countryside, where even the cows have their own appellation; La vache Normande. Not only are the cows beautiful, with their wide black and mahogany speckles, and rings around theirโ€ฆ

Apple Blackberry Slab Pie

Summer has just started and temperatures have been hovering close to 100ยบF (37ยบC). Itโ€™s been hard to stay cool but Iโ€™ve learned that temperatures are lower first thing in the morning, so I wake up earlier and get some tasks out of the way before the full blast of heat begins to slowly roast me, and my kitchen. The other thing thatโ€™s hitting us atโ€ฆ

Bistro Pierre Lapin

{UPDATE: Bistro Pierre Lapin has closed.] People are impressed with (and a little envious of) the French and their relationship to food, especially a meal. So much so that UNESCO addedย the gastronomic meal of the French to their list of Intangible Cultural Heritage designations. The gathering around the table to eat is something most cultures engage in, of course, but it seems to carry specialโ€ฆ

The Best Apple Tart in Paris

I take a tough line at calling something โ€œthe best.โ€ As anyone whoโ€™s tried to get the best chocolate shop, the best bakery, the best bistro, etc., out of me knows Iโ€™m always coy with an answer. (Someone, however, once got so upset about it that they went on an online tear about me on one of those bulletinย boards. Ouch.) Lest you think Iโ€™m notโ€ฆ

French Appetizers: Dukkah & Feta Wrapped with Prosciutto

Susan Loomis has lived in France for over twenty years, starting off in Paris, then moving with her family to an old house in Normandy that they refurbished, a story which she recounted in her best-selling book, On Rue Tatin. Iโ€™ve spent a lot of time with Susan at her home, cooking up a storm, then enjoying a wonderful meal afterwords, either outside on herโ€ฆ
