Chanceux

The other day, for some reason, the subject about the โ€œdecline of French cuisineโ€ which had been much-discussed and debated about subject a decade ago, came up. At the time, books were written about it, a Time magazine cover featured a sad mime bemoaning the end of French culture, newspapers wrote articles bemoaning faltering bistros and wondering โ€˜โ€˜Who could save French cuisine?โ€™, and French televisionโ€ฆ

La Buvette Terrine

It amuses me when people talk about snooty people sitting around, leisurely eating pรขtรฉ, because pรขtรฉ is rustic, country fare, not considered fancy in France. While pรขtรฉ can have a pastry-type crust (pรขtรฉ en croรปte) and some are a little fancier than others, the cousins of pรขtรฉ, terrines, are truly down-to-earth. They can be baked in a special mold (you can come across them atโ€ฆ

Pasta Bolognese

A while back I made Meatballs Subs because I had a craving. Theyโ€™re not that difficult to make and when you make them at home, you can use better ingredients than the versions you get elsewhere. Fortunately, thereโ€™s good bread in France and no shortage of cheese. And meatballs arenโ€™t much of a challenge to make either. (Interestingly, a few weeks after I posted thatโ€ฆ

some favorite Paris Restaurants, Bistros, Bars & Bakeries

Not a day goes by when I donโ€™t get a message requesting a restaurant recommendation in Paris. (Curiously, I also get asked for restaurant recommendations in cities Iโ€™ve never lived in, or even visited.) My promise to you is that Iโ€™ll only write up or recommend places Iโ€™ve been to, and with apologies to all whoโ€™ve asked for restaurant recommendations on social media, if Iโ€ฆ

Fall at the Market in Paris

Abruptly, itโ€™s fall. The weather turned brisk this week, and Iโ€™m starting to wonder which box my scarves and gloves are in? When I lived in San Francisco, where the weather is notoriously fickle, the joke was that the only way to tell what season it is, is to hit the market. True, not everybody is concerned with seasonality. I was recently asked during aโ€ฆ

Pork Rillettes

Rillettesย is a funny word. It always sounds like a card game โ€“ โ€œCare to play a few rounds of rillettes?โ€ I never figured out how this spreadable cornerstone of the charcuterie world got its name, but Iโ€™m sure some etymologists out there might have some insight to share? In the meantime, Iโ€™ve been enjoying being back in the kitchen. After sweating over my next book,โ€ฆ

Pottoka

Sometimes I feel like a nitwit, especially when people start talking about all the new restaurants in Paris. I am a creature of habit (and I donโ€™t like disappointment), so I generally go to the same places. I also tend to stay on the Right Bank, where I live, as the restaurants tend to be more exciting and less-fussy, with a more casual ambiance. [Update:โ€ฆ

Caractere de Cochon: the best jambon-beurre (ham sandwich) in Paris

Many times, Iโ€™ve walked by Caractรจre de Cochon, a slip of a place on a side street, just next to the earnest Marchรฉ des Enfants Rouges, in the ever-growing hipper upper haut (upper) Marais, and wondered about the cave ร  jambons jam-packed with hams of all sorts hanging in the window and from the rafters. But Iโ€™ve never stepped inside. But recently I was talkingโ€ฆ

Corsica

I finally got to Corsica. Iโ€™d heard so much about it. But somehow, Iโ€™d never made it there. Corsica is a large island off the Mediterranean coast of France, which has had a rather back-and-forth relationship with France. But the short story is that it was back under French rule in 1796, where itโ€™s firmly (although to some, precariously) remained. Its most famous resident wasโ€ฆ
