Bubbaโ€™s Fried Chicken

The hardest part about traveling and teaching classes, which Iโ€™m doing this week in Texas, is that Iโ€™m not on vacation and hence thereโ€™s almost no time to do all the things in the various cities where I am that people tell me I should do. Or I should rephrase that and say that I donโ€™t have the time to eat all the things thatโ€ฆ

A la Biche au Bois

Itโ€™s a standard request. Whenever people ask for a restaurant suggestion in Paris, even before they open their mouth I know exactly whatโ€™s comingโ€”they want a suggestion for a restaurant that: 1) Serves traditional French food, 2) Is budget friendly, and 3) Has no tourists. There are plenty of budget-friendly places to eat in Paris, like Chartier and Lโ€™As du Fallafel, but ones where youโ€™llโ€ฆ

A Visit to Rungis

During the 1960s, when Paris going through a fit of modernization, it was decided that Les Halles, the grand market that had been in the center of Paris for over a thousand years (in various guises), was going to be finally torn down and the merchants would be moved to a place well outside of the perimeter of Paris. Reasons given were that the oldโ€ฆ

Ballymaloe Cookery School

When Darina Allen sat down to talk to us, a small group of food writers, it was just after her son and daughter in law, Rachel Allen. It was definitely nap time, and I put my camera in my bag along with my notepad, and contemplated having a little bit of a mental break while sit around in a kitchen, listening as Darina planned toโ€ฆ

Kyochon

[UPDATE: Kyochon has closed. For excellent Korean friend chicken in New York, try BonChon, which is located a few steps from where Kyochon was.) Of course, I never heard of Kyochon. But when I was walking by it with my pal Matt, he said, โ€œOhโ€ฆKyochon!โ€ To me, it looked like another fast-food restaurant. And normally, Iโ€™m not a fan of fast-food, but Asian fast-food? 10 Things to Do If Youโ€™re Stuck in Paris

Yesterday, I was passing through the Place de lโ€™Opรฉra, and saw this mob outside the Air France office. And the line snaked around the block. I took a picture and went home to happily finish packing for my trip, which was going to start tomorrow. I must be living in a volcanic cloud of my own, and indeed, when I woke up, there was anโ€ฆ

Sweet and Crispy Chicken Wings

Iโ€™m always a little late to the party. For example, last week, the Super Bowl festivities took place. But honestly, I have an excuse. Actually I have a few. Since I donโ€™t live in America, there isnโ€™t much enthusiasm for American football around here. When I tried to explain the concept of the grandeur of Super Bowl Sunday to Romain, he gave me that typicallyโ€ฆ

Tandoori Chicken Recipe

Not to simplify some of the worldโ€™s great and highly-nuanced cuisines, but much of their flavors can be accomplished at home by just stocking your pantry with a few of the essential ingredients. The first time I made a tagine, Iโ€™d never mixed spices together like cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, and saffron in one dish. But what came out of my oven about an hour laterโ€ฆ

Olympic Seoul Chicken Recipe

This award-winning recipe goes quite a ways back. It first landed on my radar via food-writer Arthur Schwartz, who led me to thisย recipe forย this Asian-inspired chicken dish. It sounded so good and easy to make in a skillet, on the stovetop, and included everything I like โ€“ moist chicken thighs, a burst of chili powder, a bit of sweet-saltiness, and lots (and lots) of garlicโ€ฆ.
