Banana Bread

Iโ€™ve been thinking about Banana Bread lately, mostly due to an assortmentย of bananas that are taking up valuable real estate in my freezer. Another issue thatโ€™s taken up (valuable) space in my brain has been trying to understand theย difference between Banana Breadย and Banana Cake.ย Iโ€™ve been trying to come up with an explanation butย just canโ€™t think of one. Could just be the shape? But we donโ€™tโ€ฆ

Coffee Cajeta Ice Cream

Who knew that Mexico was famous for ice cream? I didnโ€™t, until my first trip many years ago, and saw all the heladeriasย stirring up ice cream and pushcarts, parked on sidewalks, handing out popsicles. It was my first visit and Iย had no idea what a remarkable range of flavors Mexicans incorporated into their scoops and paletas. There was chocolate, corn, coffee, cheese, peanut, and riceโ€ฆ

Peanut Butter Granola Bars

I have a mixed history with granola bars. The only ones Iโ€™ve ever made that were absolute perfection wasย when I had some peanut butter frosting leftover from a cupcake recipeย that I was playing around with. I mixed in some other ingredients into a bowl of leftover frosting on the counter, perhaps more peanut butter, some nuts, a handful of oats, etc, until it looked likeโ€ฆ

Updated Recipe Posts

When I was in high school, our principal came up on stage during assembly one morning and stood there for a moment, until he got our attention. Finally, we learned theโ€ฆ

Food Gifts to Bring French People from America

Even though globalization has made things pretty available everywhere, and things like Speculoos spread and Fleur de sel can now be found in America, it hasnโ€™t always worked quite the same the other way around. Some American things havenโ€™t made it across the Atlantic and people often think that Americans subsist on junk food because at the stores that cater to expats, and in theโ€ฆ

Thatโ€™s the way the granola bar crumbles

I think the highlight of my Christmas dinner this year was when I entered the family kitchen, where I arrive bearing the dessert, and promptly dropped the the whole thing on the floor, where it shattered into a million pieces. I sighed, and guessed it was a fitting end to a fragmented year. Having seen more than my share of kitchen catastrophes in my timeโ€ฆ

Baking Ingredients and Substitutions

Over the years, Iโ€™ve gotten many questions about substituting ingredients in recipes. Other times, people want to reduce quantities of ingredients. The main questions I get about substitutions are: Can I reduce the sugar in a recipe? How can I make a recipe gluten-free? Can I make this with a different kind of nut, or make it nut-free? What can I use in place ofโ€ฆ
