Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv was always hovering something in the middle of the ever-growing list of places I wanted to visit. But in recent years, I kept hearing what a hip place it was, and how it was sort of the โ€œSan Franciscoโ€ of Israel. Stretching along a massive beach, as soon as I arrived in the city, I wanted to ditch my luggage and jump rightโ€ฆ

Jerusalem

I shouldnโ€™t have been surprised when I was talking to someone at the airport, just after my arrival in Israel, who had asked me what I was doing in her country. When I told her I was there to learn about the cuisine โ€“ by eating it, her eyes lit up, and she said โ€“ โ€œWhenever I leave Israel, after my family, the thing Iโ€ฆ

Breakfast in Israel

Iโ€™m not at my best in the morning. Actually, Iโ€™m not at my best until at least 2pm. (Although actually, some might argue itโ€™s even a little later.) To me, breakfast is meant to be enjoyed in monk-like solitude. Itโ€™s a time where questions are prohibited and talking should be kept to an absolute minimum. Travel, of course, is fraught with all sorts of waysโ€ฆ

Rochouxโ€™s Hazelnut Praline Paste

I probably shouldnโ€™t admit this, but I rarely go over to the Saint Germain des Prรจs area much. I know, itโ€™s a popular destination for many, but if I head over there, itโ€™s usually for one thing, and one thing only: Chocolate. Most of the chocolatiers are clustered over there because, well, if you can afford to live over there, thatโ€™s where most of theโ€ฆ

How I Eat

For some reason, people are obsessed with what I eat and weigh and I get a lot of messages that say things like โ€œHow do you stay so thin?โ€ or โ€œHow can you eat all that amazing food and stay in shape?โ€ Itโ€™s not really something that Iโ€™m all that concerned about and not something I pay all that much attention to. And as muchโ€ฆ

Chocolate-Prune Cake

A while back, there was a spate of books about how to โ€˜sneakโ€™ ingredients that are โ€˜healthyโ€™ into food for your kids, to trick them into eating better. (Raymond Sokolov wrote an excellent rebuttal to that.) And recently there have been a few books written about how kids in France eat, and behave, better than their counterparts elsewhere. I canโ€™t really comment on them in-depthโ€ฆ

Restaurant Alain Ducasse

[UPDATE: The restaurant is no long an Alain Ducasse restaurant.] Uncharacteristically, Iโ€™ll spare you the specifics, but I need to catch up on about 147 hours of sleep. And while weโ€™re at it, I could use a hug. And since the former isnโ€™t necessarily easy to come by here, as is the latter, I was embrassรฉ by dinner at Alain Ducasse restaurant. While itโ€™s beenโ€ฆ

A Visit to A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or (Video)

[UPDATE: As of September 2022, after 46 years, Madame Acabo has retired and closed her shop in Paris.] A place like A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or could not exist anywhere else in the world but Paris. In this charming shop up by Montmarte you find a carefully selected assortment of candies and chocolates from the best artisans across France. Darting from shelf to shelf, owner Denise Acaboโ€ฆ

Brownie-Brown Sugar Parfaits

When I lived in San Francisco, the baking community was a very friendly group and we all mingled easily. One of the people who I particularly admired and liked was Emily Luchetti, who was also a pastry chef and cookbook author. Her desserts were known for their stunning simplicity, which highlighted bold flavors as well as local ingredients, and whose recipes walked a balance betweenโ€ฆ
