Rue Montorgueil and Les Halles, Paris

You might not remember the days before the internet, but when we used to travel somewhere, weโ€™d ask a friend to scribble down a list of suggestions. And weโ€™d often be asked to do the same in return. Then when computers became widely used, other โ€˜favoritesโ€™ lists started circulating, including suggestions posted in online forums and in blogs. So think of this list as myโ€ฆ

Amnesty Cookies

When I was speaking at the Blogher Food Conference last year, one of the organizers was telling us that on the last day of each month, she carries out what she calls E-mail Amnesty Day. On that day, she deletes all her e-mail in her Inbox, then issues an all-points-bulletin to everyone she knows that if there was anything important in there, to e-mail herโ€ฆ

German Chocolate Cupcakes

Believe it or not, thereโ€™s been a spate of cupcake places opening inโ€ฆof all placesโ€”Paris. I havenโ€™t been in to any of them, but I should probably go at some point since Iโ€™m not sure if itโ€™s just a fad thatโ€™s going to end soon, or something that might be here to stay. Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread

Iโ€™m probably not the sharpest knife in the drawer, because about a decade ago, I met two guys who were planning to start a bean-to-bar chocolate company in America. And I remember thinking, โ€œHoo-boy, are these nut-jobs going to lose their shirts! Who in America cares that much about chocolate?โ€ Fast-forward to a few years later, and Scharffen Berger chocolate became a huge hit, challenging,โ€ฆ

A lโ€™Etoile dโ€™Or

[UPDATE: As of September 2022, after 46 years, Madame Acabo has retired and closed her shop in Paris. Itโ€™s now a branch of the cookie and chocolate shop of Alain Ducasse.] You get a little lazy living here. At least I do. And because Iโ€™m not as spry as I used to be, if someone proposes a trip thatโ€™s more than one mรฉtro change away,โ€ฆ
