The Greenpoint Cocktail
A simple cocktail, riffing off the Brooklyn cocktail, as well as its other-borough cousins, the Bronx and the Manhattan, the Greenpoint boasts a double-dose of French inspiration and influences.

People sometimes pick up vermouth blanc, called bianco vermouth in Italian, and donโt realize until the open the bottle that the vermouth is sweet, when they thought they were buying dry vermouth. Donโt worry if it happened to you; it happened to a friend one mine too, who happens to be a notable spirits writer. On the upside, youโve now got one of the principalโฆ
The clever cocktail, seemingly another riff on the Negroni (like The Tunnel), is named after French fencing champion Lucien Gaudin, who won gold and silver medals in the Olympics during the 1920s. Other than that, Iโve never found any other information about it; who came up with it or why the cocktail is associated with a French fencer.
While doing research for Drinking French, I was on the prowl to find a substitute for Amer Picon, the classic apรฉritif from France thatโs not available in the U.S. While I found some alternatives that were available in America (which I listed in the book) my very favorite was Sepia Amer, made by Audemus Spirits in France. Some of the most fun I had writing Drinking French was looking at vintage ads for French spirits and apรฉritifs. I went down a lot of rabbit holes as one led me to another, then another, and then another.ย On particularly creative ad was for Suze, which showed a gentian root (the primary ingredient in the apรฉritif) playing the bottle opener like a guitar. But Iโve been trying to shake things up, so to speak, and get him to branch out to similar cocktails. And the White Lady is a good one, especially if rosemary isnโt available. But itโs an equally bracing gin and citrus cocktail, thatโs easyโฆ
One of my favorite spots in Paris is Cravan. Itโs not right in the middle of town, nor is it in the popular St. Germain area, or the trendy 10th or 11th arrondissements. But a few mรฉtro stops is all it takes to find yourself at one of the loveliest little outposts in the city.
And before we know it, itโs May. After this lockdown is over, which is planned to unfold in France on Monday, I realize Iโm going to have to go back and rewrite all the posts I wrote during the last few months as in the future, people will read them and wonder what the heck I am talking about when I say โlockdown,โ โconfinement,โ andโฆ
This elegant sipper is the creation of Damon Boelte, who is the head bartender and co-owner of Grand Army bar and restaurant in Brooklyn. Not only is Damon a great bartender, but he has a particular knack for naming cocktails. This one is based on an experimental music album (Damon is also a musician), although I like to think it got its name because itโsโฆ
