Apple Blackberry Slab Pie

Summer has just started and temperatures have been hovering close to 100ยบF (37ยบC). Itโ€™s been hard to stay cool but Iโ€™ve learned that temperatures are lower first thing in the morning, so I wake up earlier and get some tasks out of the way before the full blast of heat begins to slowly roast me, and my kitchen. The other thing thatโ€™s hitting us atโ€ฆ

La Cigogne

I was realizing lately, while packing up to head to another airport, stressing to make sure I had all my chargers, adaptors, noise-canceling earbuds, credit cards, SIM cards, and travel documents, and getting my luggage ready, fastidiously weighing it, and to make sure I wouldnโ€™t have to pay $150 in excess fees, then checking in and getting my seat assignment, then braving the traffic onโ€ฆ

Far Breton

The other day, while minding my business, taking a casual stroll about town, I suddenly realized that Iโ€™d written โ€œBonne anniversaire,โ€ or โ€œHappy Birthday,โ€ in French, here on the site. Itโ€™s an honest mistake because the happy (or bon, er, I mean, bonne) expression is pronounced bonneanniversaire, rather than bon (with a hard โ€œnโ€) anniversaire, because, as the French would say, itโ€™s โ€œplus jolie,โ€ orโ€ฆ

Lebanon

UPDATE: My visit to Lebanon was in 2013 and I had a marvelous time visiting. In recent years, a powerful explosion rocked Beirut, and subsequent social and economic changes happened, and I havenโ€™t been back. Before planning a trip, do some reading or talk to a travel professional about visiting Lebanon and what to expect. The Middle East is a pretty fascinating place, and onโ€ฆ

Monaco, Max, Martell, His Majesty, and Me

Iโ€™m tired. Or as Madeleine Kahn more bluntly put it in Blazing Saddles, โ€œG-ddammit, Iโ€™m exhausted.โ€ The last few weeks Iโ€™ve been racing around Paris in my dusty clothes, trying to find things like electrical switches, bathroom shelves, and making a decision about kitchen cabinet knobs for much longer than any sane person would consider prudent. And Iโ€™ve been averaging about three hours of sleepโ€ฆ

Sprinting Toward the Finishโ€ฆ

Everything is a mess, including my computer. I started writing this story, and lost it. (The story, I mean. I donโ€™t mean that โ€œI lost itโ€ โ€“ although I fear thatโ€™s coming.) I have piles of paperwork stacked up all around my apartment, including on every chairs and the couch. Next to my kitchen counter is a stack of unfinished recipes Iโ€™m testing, with notesโ€ฆ

Sidecar Cocktails

For someone who used to not drink that much, I seem to have a lot of liquor on my liquor shelf. I guess I should rephrase that. For someone who drinks a lot of wine, but not a lot of liquor, I sure have a lot of liquor on my liquor shelf. Is that clear? Americans may be known for our cocktails, but in France,โ€ฆ

Cognac

How does Cognac get to thisโ€ฆ โ€ฆfrom this? I didnโ€™t know, but I was determined to taste as many glasses as I could to find out. The first thing I was asked before heading down into my first Cognac cellar during my recent visit was, โ€œAre you afraid of spiders?โ€

The Coopers of Cognac

Earlier this week, I woke up in a small town, smelling of something. It wasnโ€™t anything bad. In fact, it was pretty good: sweet, caramel-like, and roasted, with a vague, but lingering aftermath of alcohol following it. It wasnโ€™t something I was used to, but Iโ€™d tasted so many Cognacs this week in the town of Cognac, that it was literally wafting out my poresโ€ฆ.
