Butterscotch Bars

Itโ€™s been an interesting year, hasnโ€™t it? Iโ€™ve been on a bit of a bender lately, getting rid of (or at least, reducing) paperwork thatโ€™s been piling up and holds little interest for me.ย I have so much that I had to buy more paper (as in, paper file folders) to store all that paperwork in which seems redundant, but living in a place where paperโ€ฆ

Canistrelli

The last two cookies Iโ€™ve made on this site have been American-style, i.e.; on the larger side, with lots of flavors and other stuff going on. I like those, but I also like โ€œquietโ€ European cookies, which are often simple, sometimes somewhat plain (like French sablรฉs, or butter cookies), that let you focus on one or two flavors. Canistrelli fit that profile. Originally from Corsica,โ€ฆ

Caramel-Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies

Thereโ€™s a lot of โ€œstuffedโ€ stuff that goes viral online and it wasnโ€™t my intention to do a caramel-stuffed chocolate chip cookie. Yet there I was, faced with a few batches of caramels leftover from recipe testing that didnโ€™t quite make the cut, and wanted to put the caramels to good use. So why not?

Oatmeal and Pecan Brittle Cookies

This year was a good year for baking books. I didnโ€™t get to see them all, or bake from them, but one that I got a preview of before it was released was Dessert Person by Claire Saffitz. She may be familiar to you because of her tenure in the test kitchen at Bon Appรฉtit and more recently, her very popular online videos, but readingโ€ฆ

Cranzac Cookies

When the lockdown was announced about a month ago, I thought of all the great things I would finally be able to do. I would finally tackle those five- to seven-season tv series that everyone told me that I just had to watch, that require a hundred-hour commitment to get through them. (Breaking Bad and The Wire, Iโ€™m looking at youโ€ฆ) I would have theโ€ฆ

Chocolate Chip โ€œKitchen Sinkโ€ Cookies

Being confined for two weeks has been, um, interesting. As someone who works at home, I was, like, โ€œI got thisโ€ฆโ€ But by day two I started getting loopy. As much as I think Romain is the greatest thing ever, itโ€™s hard to be cooped up and not allowed to go out. True, we can go to the grocery store or bakery if we bringโ€ฆ

Crepes Dentelle cookies (Gavottes)

These may be the best cookies in the world. Okay, theyโ€™re not really cookies, per se. At least not in the French sense. Les cookies refers to chocolate chip cookiesย and these ultra-thin, ultra-crisp, and ultra-buttery tasting crรชpes dentelles are so different, yet so good, youโ€™ll find yourself eating your way through several of them in no time. To prove that point, as a courtesy, theโ€ฆ

Peanut Butter Paprika Cookies

There isnโ€™t quite a word for โ€œpieโ€ in French.ย Tourteย describes a double-crusted, enclosed pastry of some sort, but isnโ€™t quite the same as pies in the States are. Like dishes from other nationalities and cultures, pie represents a tradition to Americans. Pies are a dessert we look forward to baking when fruitย and berries comeย into season, and they are an essential part of our holidays, like Thanksgivingโ€ฆ

Mesquite Chocolate Chip Cookies

A few weeks ago, I was talking to someone about chocolate chip cookies, which is one of my favorite subjects. The French like them, too. They just call them les cookies, as if they didnโ€™t need further clarification. But every time I make a batch of chocolate chip cookies, I have zero trouble handing them off to people. Who can resist a chocolate chip cookie,โ€ฆ
