Vivant

[Update: Vivant closed, then changed owners and is now a completely different restaurant.] If you have a lot of food concerns โ€“ if you need to know how something is cooked, or what vegetables are included in les lรฉgumes โ€“ although theyโ€™re happy to answer, at Vivant you should just let your experience of the restaurant be guided by slipping out of the mode ofโ€ฆ

Paris Tacos y Burritos

Itโ€™s kind of funny because the two times I went out with two different French friends for Mexican food this week, they practically wiped the table clean. Both said after eating, โ€œDaveedโ€ฆjโ€™ai encore faim.โ€ (โ€œIโ€™m still hungry.โ€) The first time was at Cactus, where my friend (who I am pretty sure has .5% body fat) wolfed down his burrito and the aforementioned declaration of hunger,โ€ฆ

Les Fines Gueules

Itโ€™s funny because I used to pass the building that houses Les Fines Gueules and think โ€œGosh, I would love to live in that building.โ€ Itโ€™s just off the stately Place des Victoires, on a corner lot, and really, how nice would it be to sit on that balcony and catch some sun while having my morning coffee? Then one day a few years agoโ€ฆ

Edzoโ€™s Burger Shop

Whatโ€™s not to like about Edzoโ€™s Burger Shop? Imagine a hamburger joint that offers not one, but two different options for sustainable and humanely raised beef. Or โ€œOld Friesโ€ for those that like our frites extra-crispy. Or Angry Fries, dusted with โ€œfour kinds of spicy.โ€ Although next time, Iโ€™m getting the Garlic Fries because when the pile landed on the table next to us, drizzledโ€ฆ

Why is the food so sad at Charles de Gaulle Airport?

[Update 2024: Since I wrote this article, a lot has changed at the airport, in terms of food, and there are much better places to eat at the airports in Paris. And there are now kiosks from some of the best chocolate and pastry shops in France at the airports, including Ladurรฉe, La Maison du Chocolat, and Pierre Hermรฉ. The food on the French trainsโ€ฆ

Restaurant Astier

Whatโ€™s not to like about a somewhat out-of-the-way bistrotiรจre like Astier, serving examples of classic French cuisine, keeping the torch alive of a genre thatโ€™s become harder to find done right? The pre-fixe menu at Astier is a little gentler at โ‚ฌ35, and you can choose from four of five selections in each category. There are more extensive selections on the ร  la carte sideโ€ฆ

Mexican Restaurants in Paris

People are surprised that there is a craving amongst a certain crowd (namely transplanted Californiansโ€ฆbut with a growing number of Parisianย locals) seeking Mexican food in Paris. Like any city with an international population, a variety of ethnic food and places are welcome. Parisians, notably the younger set, are becoming more adventurous about Latin American foods and the quality of Mexican places is getting better, includingโ€ฆ

Raclette

Sometimes you wonder if people do eat all the stuff we think they eat in other countries. Do Russian people really eat blini and follow them up with shots of iced vodka? In Hawaii, are people sitting around dipping their fingers into bowls of poi? Do Americans actually eat the skins of potatoes? How many Parisians actually nibble on macarons? And is it so thatโ€ฆ

Maoz Falafel in Paris

Yes, thatโ€™s me in the corner, wolfing down falafels at Maoz. I was trying to figure out a way to break the news, but my favorite falafel place in Paris is not where you think it is. Last time I went to another joint, the French fries that came out were so light and limp that I was wondering what was going through the headโ€ฆ
