Cassoulet Toast

Iโ€™m a big fan of traditional Cassoulet. And Iโ€™m not alone; a repeated question I get is โ€œWhere can I get a good cassoulet in Paris?โ€ The short answer is: To the Southwest of France. Sure, one can pick up a jar of Cassoulet from Castelnaudary, or make it, which I sometimes do. For those who want to tackle the project, thereโ€™s a recipe inโ€ฆ

A Noste

Although Iโ€™m trying to make it less-so, itโ€™s rare that I go out to lunch with friends. People tend to think that everybody in Paris sits around all day, eating dainty macarons and sipping a coffee at the corner cafรฉ watching the world go by, while youโ€™re all working away. But most of us are swamped like everybody else (including you), hurdling toward deadlines, waitingโ€ฆ

Le Petit Saint Benoit

I was recently following an online kerfuffle about the role that folks who blog about Paris play on the Paris dining scene. On one hand, thereโ€™s those of us that live and write about the city. On another are newspapers and magazines that do the same thing. I think I might be living under a rocher because although I do follow and read some ofโ€ฆ

Paris Restaurants

Iโ€™m just finishing up my Paris Chocolate Tours with guests this week and weโ€™ve had a terrific time visiting everywhere from Rungis market to watching the talented confectioners at Fouquet work their sweet magic. Because several folks were spending a couple extra days in Paris, I made up a list of some places to eat they might enjoy, that arenโ€™t stuffy or too-expensive, but placesโ€ฆ

Rue Montorgueil and Les Halles, Paris

You might not remember the days before the internet, but when we used to travel somewhere, weโ€™d ask a friend to scribble down a list of suggestions. And weโ€™d often be asked to do the same in return. Then when computers became widely used, other โ€˜favoritesโ€™ lists started circulating, including suggestions posted in online forums and in blogs. So think of this list as myโ€ฆ

Where Is the Best Duck Confit in Paris?

On her last visit to Paris, I introduced my cousin whoโ€™s a Franco-phile, to confit de canard, knowing that sheโ€™d love it. When I saw the rapture that took over when she put that first forkful in her mouth, I could see that she was hooked as I am. Iโ€™d taken her to Chez Dumonet, which is reliably excellent. This time, though, Iโ€™d like toโ€ฆ

Camp Cassoulet

Most people when they think of France, they think of only two places: Paris and Provence. While Iโ€™ll admit both are lovely spots for a visit (or in the case of Paris, to live in), thereโ€™s a lot more to this country than those two destinations. I suppose the romance of lavender in everything and hoards of tourists does have its appeal, but to me,โ€ฆ
