Nectarine-Berry Popsicles

During the summer, at outdoor flea markets and brocantes, youโ€™ll invariably find me on my hands and knees, rifle through boxes that are jammed with stuff, since ya never know what youโ€™ll pluck out. Iโ€™m particularly keen on finding old French baking items, although Iโ€™ve learned that all those pretty little tin tart molds are best left to clutter someone elseโ€™s kitchen drawers. And sinceโ€ฆ

Bordeaux

If you havenโ€™t been to Bordeaux in a while, you might be in for a shock, although itโ€™s more like, youโ€™ll be in for a treat. Previously considered a staid city, Bordeaux has rebooted itself, partially thanks to a tram system that makes getting around the formerly congested city a breeze, but also because the TGV now can get you there in around two hours,โ€ฆ

La Brocalou le Titoustock โ€“ French Antique Store

UPDATE: As of September 2021, the owner has closed this store for good. โ€œJe nโ€™en ai pas besoin, maisโ€ฆโ€ Those are words I constantly tell myself when Iโ€™m at a flea market or brocante (antique or secondhand shop) and come across something that I like (or want). Piles of gorgeous French linens, mortars without (or without) pestles, French jam jars, and no longer loved cafรฉโ€ฆ

The Marche dโ€™Aligre in Paris

When I moved to Paris, I didnโ€™t liveย far from the Marchรฉ dโ€™Aligre. Not known for having a great sense of direction or distance, I didnโ€™t know how close I was and would take the bus home, loaded down with my purchases from the market. There was a closer market in the Bastille, but the Aligre market was especially bustling, and had an energy and dynamicโ€ฆ

My French Pottery

A while back, a reader suggested that I do a post about my pottery collection. When I told Romain about it he looked surprised and said that it wasnโ€™t a collection but just stacks of pottery. However itโ€™s considered in the world of les collectionneurs that if you have three or more of any object, thatโ€™s a collection. And I certainly have more than threeโ€ฆ

Paris Flea Markets and Thrift Stores

When I lived in a small apartment, I had to pass on many of the great things I would find at flea markets and antique sales in Paris. As Parisians say: โ€œSomething inโ€ฆsomething outโ€ โ€“ meaning that if you brought something into your apartment, you had to get rid of something else to make room for it. Which can be a challenge when thereโ€™s soโ€ฆ

TGIF (aka DMCV)

Although it doesnโ€™t quite translate, Dieu merci, cโ€™est vendredi โ€“ or as Iโ€™m going to say in English, Thank God Itโ€™s Friday (TGIF), because itโ€™s been quite a week. (On a related note, I was recently informed by a French friend that a 4-day weekend is not a vacation โ€“ itโ€™s just a few days off, or a pont (bridge.) But even though I tookโ€ฆ

My Le Creuset Casserole

Thereโ€™s much debate about what time itโ€™s okay to telephone someone at home. How late is too late in the evening? How early is too early? Are they friends, or family? When I moved to Paris, a French friend told me, โ€œNever call anyone before noon on Sunday.โ€ I made that mistake when I was still new to the city and the groggy response onโ€ฆ
