Cafe du Coin

Iโ€™m often asked by people coming to Paris what neighborhood they should stay in. The usual โ€œoff-the-beaten-pathโ€ฆbut not too far from the centerโ€ doesnโ€™t help me figure out what fits those seemingly opposing bills. Everything in Paris is pretty close and most places are a 20 minute mรฉtro ride away. Like most cities, the good places arenโ€™t clustered in the center of the city. Theyโ€™reโ€ฆ

La Bourse et la Vie

[UPDATE: The restaurant has changed its format offering a fixed-price meal (currently โ‚ฌ67) that includes starters and main courses, but not desserts or sides. I havenโ€™t been back since they instituted the change.] When Daniel Rose opened his first restaurant, Spring, it was a small, seasonally driven restaurant on an unremarkable street in theย 9th arrondissement. Word quickly spread about the talented chef, who helped fuelย aย revolutionโ€ฆ

Epicure Restaurant at The Bristol Hotel

It was quite a summer, starting with sipping homemade cherry wine, a picnic at Versailles, checking outย the Le Creuset factory, and frying up a batch of โ€œFrenchโ€ fried chicken in a sizzling pan ofย duck fat. A few weeks later inย the season, I was pulling a cherry clafoutis from my oven, grilling deviled chicken, and pickling strawberries, to take care of the overload from the outdoorโ€ฆ

Faux Gras: Vegetarian mushroom pate

People often think of Paris as a museum stuck in the past. Sure, one of the things we all love about Paris is the old charm that persists in the architecture, the culture, the cuisine, and in some cases, the way of thinking. But itโ€™s hard to stop new ideas, especially when they become widely adopted,ย as the next generationย comes along with different ideas and expectations.ย โ€ฆ

Weekend Out of Paris

May is the month of holidays in France. There are elevenย public holidays a year, called jours fรฉriรฉs, which we might call โ€œbank holidaysโ€ in the United States. Theyโ€™re official holidays/dates when government offices, schools, banks, and most stores are closed, except for a few supermarkets, convenience stores, and bakeries, which need to follow certain rules as to when they canย close in the summer, so theyโ€™reโ€ฆ

Les Sources de Caudalie

I went to les Sources de Caudalie over a decade ago with the intention of bringing a group of guests there. While it was, indeed, a lovely place, it wasnโ€™t really near anything, so folks wouldnโ€™t be able to go out explore on their own unless they had a car. However, it is smack-dab in the middle of Bordeaux wine country, on the Chรขteau Smithโ€ฆ

Au Sauvignon

I was recently reading a Paris-based website and a reader had written to them, asking them why they were always talking about restaurants in the 10th arrondissement where โ€œ.. there isnโ€™t much to do there.โ€ The response was that thatโ€™s where most of the new and interesting places are opening. And while itโ€™s not where most visitors dream about staying when they come to Paris,โ€ฆ

Pierre Herme Macarons

One of the things about living in a city like Paris is that you spend a lot of time โ€“ well, dealing with life. Bills to pay, paperwork to do, typos to avoid, stolen bikes to replace, smokers to dodge on sidewalks waving lit cigarettes (I got nailed the other day โ€“ ouch!), or buying a pair of shoes, can easily take up much โ€“โ€ฆ

Restaurant Alain Ducasse

[UPDATE: The restaurant is no long an Alain Ducasse restaurant.] Uncharacteristically, Iโ€™ll spare you the specifics, but I need to catch up on about 147 hours of sleep. And while weโ€™re at it, I could use a hug. And since the former isnโ€™t necessarily easy to come by here, as is the latter, I was embrassรฉ by dinner at Alain Ducasse restaurant. While itโ€™s beenโ€ฆ
