Plum Sorbet

When I wrote the first edition of The Perfect Scoop. I only allowed myself to use the word โ€œrefreshing โ€œ once, which Iโ€™m pretty sure I did. When you write a book, thereโ€™s a tendency to include everything that you possibly can, but a number of things can nudge them out, such as having photos, which everyone loves. So although I included Plum-Blackberry Swirl Iceโ€ฆ

Plum and Rhubarb Crisp

Iโ€™m not sure if I just returned from lunch, or if I was privy to a top-secret breeding ground for a race of super lovely people, that also happen to be amazing cooks. When I walked into the home of Rachel Allen, whoโ€™d invited a few of us traveling through Ireland for lunch, I was stunned by A) The stunning kitchen, b) The stunning view,โ€ฆ

Fall at the Market in Paris

Abruptly, itโ€™s fall. The weather turned brisk this week, and Iโ€™m starting to wonder which box my scarves and gloves are in? When I lived in San Francisco, where the weather is notoriously fickle, the joke was that the only way to tell what season it is, is to hit the market. True, not everybody is concerned with seasonality. I was recently asked during aโ€ฆ

Blueberry Cobbler

When I was in Rhode Island recently, blueberries were just on the cusp of spilling forth, and I was lucky to be able to find some of the early, inky-colored orbs. Because I grew up in New England, I have a special fondness for blueberries, which are rather scarce in Paris* (when available, theyโ€™re sold in small barquettes with a few dozen berries in them),โ€ฆ

La Newyorkina Mexican Ice Cream

Update: La Newyorkina closed in January, 2021. You can still get La Newyorkina products online and at selected outlets. More on their website. Before my first trip to Mexico a number ofย years ago, I didnโ€™t know Mexico was a countryย known for itsย ice cream (helado), let alone an array of other delicious sweets. I wandered through panaderias (bakeries) with the metal tray and tongs they gaveโ€ฆ

Cherry Poppy Seed Cake

With spring around the corner, all thoughts are turning to fruit, while we wait for stone fruits to arrive. Nectarines, peaches, plums and apricots will soon be at the markets, usually led by cherries, which are often the first to make an appearance. I was leafing through Sweeter Off the Vine, by Yossy Arefi, a book dedicated to using fruit year-round, from squash, pumpkin andโ€ฆ

Cranberry Shrub and Cranberry Shrub Cocktail

Iโ€™ve been laid up thisย week with a messed upย knee, and let me tell you, it hasnโ€™t been easy. The moment theย accident happened, I felt my entire legย buckle, and for the next 72 hours I could barely move. Stairs were impossible and even putting on socks was a Herculean task. Sleep also eluded meย because there was no position that I could hold my leg in thatโ€ฆ

Mirabelle Jam

My favorite fruits are plums, which, confusingly for anglophones, are called prunes, in French, or pruneaux, when they are dried. (And boy, are they delicious!) They show up late at the markets in Paris, but stick around longer, overlapping with apples and pears, which arrive in early fall.ย Most of the plums that you see in Paris markets arenโ€™t the tart varieties that are eaten outโ€ฆ

Blueberry Buckle with Lemon Syrup

We sure do haveย some goofy-named foods in America. Britain has their โ€œfoolsโ€ and โ€œmesses,โ€ and France has โ€œbรชtises,โ€ which translates toย โ€œstupiditiesโ€ โ€“ as well asย pรชts de nonne, which, because Iโ€™m polite, will only say that refers to the wind that comes out of the backside of nuns โ€“ and leave it at that. Stateside, weย have our grunts, buckles, and pandowdies, as well as burgoo. Andโ€ฆ
