Les Tomates

The French have a lot of protests and manifestations. Some of the issues they march for are a bit of a reach and we roll our eyes. And itโ€™s annoying when the trains and other forms of transport go on strike and you need to get somewhere. But on the other hand, itโ€™s good that they feel strongly about certain issues, enough to hit theโ€ฆ

Porchetta

It felt a little funny heading over to Porchetta for lunch. I mean, I live right next to Italy and had amazing porchetta there just recently. So why am I taking a lengthy subway trip down to the East Village for lunch? And I was tempted even further when I was on the way to meet my friend Shira (who I met on a boatโ€ฆ

Al Taglio

{UPDATE: Al Taglio is now closed.] For quite some time, whenever Iโ€™d go out to eat in Paris with a visiting friend, their gaze would invariably land on something Italian on the menu. And theyโ€™d want to order something like risotto or salad Caprese, which Iโ€™d warn them away from. Or pizza, which might come to the table with some unexpected topping, like canned cornโ€ฆ

Potato-Leek Soup Recipe

I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever made a New Yearโ€™s resolution. Even if I did, I likely didnโ€™t have much success sticking with any of them, so I just donโ€™t bother with them anymore. Usually resolutions involve quickly-forgotten rules about eating better, losing weight, and saving money. (Which is probably why I never make them in the first place.) So I wouldnโ€™t place any bets thatโ€ฆ

Aioli โ€“ Garlic Mayonnaise Recipe

On a recent visit with my friend Tricia Robinson, who lives in the small village of St Jeannet, overlooking Nice and the Cรดte dโ€™Azur, after a huge lunch, we werenโ€™t that hungry for dinner, so we decided to just sip some rosรฉ and wait for inspiration to strike. I was admiring her mortar and pestle, there was some violet-colored spring garlic, a bottle of localโ€ฆ

Easy Pickled Carrots

Before I went away for recent my trip to New York City, as a gesture of extraordinary kindness to the person who I swapped apartments with, I cleaned out some of the things in my fridge. Nevertheless, she managed to find my stash of crunchy organic peanut butter, but curiously missed the luscious jar of salted butter caramel from Henri Le Roux in Brittany. Whatโ€™sโ€ฆ

Arthur Schwartzโ€™s Homemade Kosher Dill Pickle Recipe

Itโ€™s nice to know Iโ€™m not the only one having wrestling with foreign languages around here. A couple of weeks ago I was buying some olives at an รฉpicerie, and the woman, who wanted to practice her English, as she spooned olives in to a sack, reassured me; โ€œDonโ€™t worry. I will give you some brain with that.โ€ Thinking maybe it was some odd Frenchโ€ฆ

Kimchi

I first posted this kimchi recipe back in 2008. (Actually, I had posted another kimchi recipe earlier that year, but then found that I preferred this one.) At the time, I was a newbie in Paris and had a hard time finding kimchi. You can buy it at some of the Korean markets, such as Ace Mart and K-Mart on the rue Sainte-Anne, but Koreanโ€ฆ

Olympic Seoul Chicken Recipe

This award-winning recipe goes quite a ways back. It first landed on my radar via food-writer Arthur Schwartz, who led me to thisย recipe forย this Asian-inspired chicken dish. It sounded so good and easy to make in a skillet, on the stovetop, and included everything I like โ€“ moist chicken thighs, a burst of chili powder, a bit of sweet-saltiness, and lots (and lots) of garlicโ€ฆ.
