Vietnam, Part 2

Hitting the road again, or the skies I should say (although we did one bus ride during our trip โ€“ more about that laterโ€ฆ), we touched down in Da Nang, specifically to visitย The Museum of Cham Sculpture, a museum that is not to be missed if youโ€™re in Vietnam.

Vietnam

I wrote a story in my next book about all the places that Iโ€™m supposed to go to, or want to go to, or should go to. For a long time, Vietnam was near the very top of that list. We have friends that live in Vietnam, settling there after a few years of living in Japan, Laos,ย and Thailand. An assortment of commitments had preventedโ€ฆ

Epicure Restaurant at The Bristol Hotel

It was quite a summer, starting with sipping homemade cherry wine, a picnic at Versailles, checking outย the Le Creuset factory, and frying up a batch of โ€œFrenchโ€ fried chicken in a sizzling pan ofย duck fat. A few weeks later inย the season, I was pulling a cherry clafoutis from my oven, grilling deviled chicken, and pickling strawberries, to take care of the overload from the outdoorโ€ฆ

Les Sources de Caudalie

I went to les Sources de Caudalie over a decade ago with the intention of bringing a group of guests there. While it was, indeed, a lovely place, it wasnโ€™t really near anything, so folks wouldnโ€™t be able to go out explore on their own unless they had a car. However, it is smack-dab in the middle of Bordeaux wine country, on the Chรขteau Smithโ€ฆ

Hyeres, Provence

I had no sooner returned from Sicily, then I unpacked my suitcase, re-packed my suitcase, and headed back out, to Provence. Even though Iโ€™d just returned from a ten-day trip, my other half was doing a project in the city I went along for the ride because, 1) Who wants to be sitting in a hot apartment, alone, in the summer, when you could beโ€ฆ

Shang Palace

Quite a while back, I worked at an Asian restaurant in San Francisco. The food was amazing. Fresh shrimp were cooked up, chopped, then smeared on bread, then deep-fried for shrimp toast. All the dumplings had freshly cooked ingredients in them โ€“ no canned peas or frozen shrimp. And each one was hand-rolled. All the meats were well-sourced and cooked daily, then shredded for fillingsโ€ฆ

Paris-Lausanne Tour 2012

I donโ€™t know why, but almost all the pictures from my Paris-Lausanne culinary tour came out kinda goofy. Out-of-focus, askew, grainy, or thereโ€™s odd pictures of sidewalks, one of me lounging in a bathrobe, guests eating and drinking (no one looks great when putting a forkful of food in their mouths so those pictures Iโ€™ll keep to myselfโ€ฆand I hope they do likewise), lots ofโ€ฆ

Monaco, Max, Martell, His Majesty, and Me

Iโ€™m tired. Or as Madeleine Kahn more bluntly put it in Blazing Saddles, โ€œG-ddammit, Iโ€™m exhausted.โ€ The last few weeks Iโ€™ve been racing around Paris in my dusty clothes, trying to find things like electrical switches, bathroom shelves, and making a decision about kitchen cabinet knobs for much longer than any sane person would consider prudent. And Iโ€™ve been averaging about three hours of sleepโ€ฆ

In-Room Coffee

One of my great joys in life in in-room coffee. Hotels do a lot of head-scratching things, like inventing โ€˜turn-down service.โ€™ Aside from a free piece of chocolate, does anyone like or want someone rummaging through their room while theyโ€™re out at dinner? Or the โ€œhotel channelโ€, which shows and glorifies the splendors of your hotel, which is kind of silly since youโ€™re already thereโ€ฆ.
