Banana-Brown Sugar Ice Cream

My recent banana windfall gave me the chance to play around a bit with various banana ice cream combinations. Since bananas are such a natural partner for coconut, I reasoned, โ€œWhy use milk or cream when thereโ€™s coconut milk?โ€ So I reached for a can of coconut. Continuing with that train of thought, I figured itโ€™d be interesting to useย jaggery, raw cane sugar thatโ€™s usedโ€ฆ

Scoop

For the first five years in Paris, I wouldnโ€™t go to Scoop. Iโ€™d walk by, scan the selections of hamburgers and โ€œles wrapsโ€, and keep going. Even though I was intrigued with the list of house-made ice creams, Iโ€™d always reason to myself, โ€œI didnโ€™t move to Paris to eat a hamburger.โ€ I was reading recently about a site called My American Market that carriesโ€ฆ

Food Blogger Camp, part 2

Thereโ€™s nothing that can kill a great trip more than a bad airline experience. But since Twitter has now become the airlineโ€™s biggest public relations headache, I wonโ€™t complain about anything. Okay, except for the guy sitting in front of me for the 12-plus hour flight, who kept insisting that if he just leaned forward, then slammed his body backwards, his seat back would goโ€ฆ

Stop the Stuffing!

The other night I was standing on the mรฉtro and found myself face ร  face with a little affiche advising me, minding my own business as I rocketed below Paris, that itโ€™s not alright to eat Mr. Ed. Then on Tuesday, I was taking a stroll through the thirteenth, on my way to have lunch with a friend in Chinatown, and came across a signโ€ฆ

Polenta Ice Cream (Gelato di polenta)

Technically this gelato isnโ€™t โ€˜polentaโ€™ ice cream, but itโ€™s made with corn flour. But when I was in Torino, Italy last year, a local gelateria was making what they were billing as a โ€˜polentaโ€™ gelato, using farina bรณna. So if you want to argue with an Italian chef, youโ€™re welcome to. After tangling with puzzling bureaucratic paperwork for a disproportionately-large chunk of my days lately,โ€ฆ

Pumpkin Ice Cream Recipe

Every year I get a numberย of requests from people looking for a recipe for great Pumpkin Ice Cream. In my book,ย The Perfect Scoop, I have a recipe for Sweet Potato Ice Cream studded with maple-glazed pecans, but thereโ€™s something about the fall that also makes people think squarely of pumpkin. Iโ€™m a big fan of sweet potatoes, personally, but old traditions die hard. So aย Pumpkinโ€ฆ

Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream

If youโ€™re looking for a simple scoop of chocolate ice creamโ€ฆor vanillaโ€ฆor strawberryโ€ฆyouโ€™re not going to find it at Humphry Slocombe in San Francisco. Okay, you might see one of them nestled somewhere amongst the wacky flavors on the ever-changing list. But youโ€™ll have a better chance of finding Fumรฉ (smoked) ice cream, Chocolate passion fruit, and cinnamon brittle. Thereโ€™s a decidedly non-kosher Boccalone proscuittoโ€ฆ

Caramelized White Chocolate Ice Cream Recipe

When I gave the terrific recipe for the Caramelized White Chocolate, which I learned to make at Valrhonaโ€™s chocolate school, Iโ€™d hoped that many of you would use it to create your own concoctions. While no one came up with my favorite (stirred into oatmeal!), there was a lot of creativity put forth as people made everything from Caramelized White Chocolate Bars to a spreadโ€ฆ

le 14 juillet

This morning when I woke up, it sounded like rain outside. Which was odd, because of the harsh sun streaking through the creases in my beloved light-blocking curtains, it seemed strange that there would be precipitation. And sure enough, when I stumbled over and yanked opened the curtain, the sky was crystalline bleu with just a few wisps of clouds lingering around the Eiffel Towerโ€ฆ.
