Pozole

Iโ€™m one of those people that doesnโ€™t order soup when I go out to eat. I guess I feel like soup is something that I should be eating at home. While words like โ€œcomfort foodโ€ and โ€œnourishingโ€ are easy-to-reach descriptions to attach to soup, I try not to overthink it. It just seems like home is the right place to be, to spoon up aโ€ฆ

Cobb Salad

The first avocado I ever had was at Scandia restaurant in Los Angeles and I hated it. The slippery little green cubes avoided my fork, until finally, I managed to spear one. Once I did, I swallowed it โ€“ reluctantly,ย then avoided the rest of them on my plate. Iโ€™m not sure how I came to eventually love avocados, but the city of Los Angeles isโ€ฆ

L.A.

Iโ€™m one of those people who loves Los Angeles. Even rarer, Iโ€™m one of those San Franciscans who loves Los Angeles. Each sometimes writes off the other, and the two big cities in California are often at odds with each other. One is serious, grey, and a little foreboding and mysterious. (But hold the alfalfa sprouts; does anyone really likeโ€ฆ

Blue Cheese Dressing

I donโ€™t know what possessed me the other day, but there I was, and there it wasโ€”I was faced with a big mound of Iceberg lettuce heads at the market, two for one euro, so I bought two of them. Although I donโ€™t eat it very often, I love Iceberg lettuce salad and anyone who says they donโ€™t is probably fibbing. People will often justifyโ€ฆ

How to Make French Vinaigrette

One assumption that Iโ€™m going to make about the French is that theyโ€™re not afraid to make things au pif, or โ€œby the noseโ€. I donโ€™t know if a precise recipe for sauce vinaigrette actually exists. But if there is, I bet few people follow it very closely. And Romain is no different from his compatriots when it comes to recipes, and rules. They areโ€ฆ

Creamy Feta-Red Wine Vinegar Salad Dressing

When I was a newbie, someone in the cookbook biz once told me that if a cookbook has one great recipe in it, itโ€™s totally worth it. And I agree with that. I have a mountain of cookbooks, and most have plenty of tempting recipes but Iโ€™ve only made one thing from many of them. But those that do make the cut become standardsโ€”or whatโ€ฆ
