The Jockey Club cocktail

When I write a book, Iโ€™m all in. Thatโ€™s why I tend to lean into single-subject books, exploring ice cream, cooking and baking in Paris, and the traditions and culture of French drinks. Each book gives me an opportunity to take a deep dive into something that I love, but also allows me to learn and discover something new. Iโ€™ve always liked the flavor ofโ€ฆ

Provencal Chicken with Pastis

In France, youโ€™re either a juilettiste or aoรปtien, meaning you take your annual summer vacation in July or August, although many get more than four weeks off (and some get less), so thereโ€™s room for a few crossovers as well. I donโ€™t know what the word for someone who takes their summer vacation during both months isโ€ฆchanceux?ย (lucky?) โ€“ or if there is a word forโ€ฆ

Warm Chartreuse Souffle with Chocolate Sauce

Iโ€™ve had a long love affair with Chartreuseย liqueur, even before I visited the monastery back in the 1990โ€™s. We were led through a somewhat terrifyingย display of hooded monks (not real ones, fortunately, but long-face replicas), the kind you see in historical or agricultural museums in France that are meant to depict a historical representationย of something, even drying prunes โ€“ likely for educational purposes, but alwaysโ€ฆ

La Maison du Whisky

This weekend, I think I just made my twentieth, and last, visit of the year to La Maison du Whisky. For the life of me, I have no idea what prompted me to go to a liquor store the Saturday before Christmas. Well, actually I do. I was preparing to refill one of my empty cocktail aging barrels and the next cocktail on the docketโ€ฆ

Spritz

Cocktail culture has landed in Paris. It took a while, though. France has always been known for its wine and beer, rather than Torontos, Cosmopolitans, and Martinis. And many of us have memories of trying to explain to a very confused cafรฉ waiter how to make a martini, when they want to serve you a glass of Martini & Rossi (vermouth).

Sidecar Cocktails

For someone who used to not drink that much, I seem to have a lot of liquor on my liquor shelf. I guess I should rephrase that. For someone who drinks a lot of wine, but not a lot of liquor, I sure have a lot of liquor on my liquor shelf. Is that clear? Americans may be known for our cocktails, but in France,โ€ฆ

The Coopers of Cognac

Earlier this week, I woke up in a small town, smelling of something. It wasnโ€™t anything bad. In fact, it was pretty good: sweet, caramel-like, and roasted, with a vague, but lingering aftermath of alcohol following it. It wasnโ€™t something I was used to, but Iโ€™d tasted so many Cognacs this week in the town of Cognac, that it was literally wafting out my poresโ€ฆ.

Liqueur de noix: Green Walnut Liqueur

I recently stayed with some friends who have a house in the Lot, a lesser-visited area of France which is really beautiful. It lacks beaches, which seems to be the only thing keeping it from being an ideal summer vacation spot for tourists. Consequently, I was able to score some gorgeous old bistro wine glasses at a local flea market, which wouldโ€™ve been ten timesโ€ฆ
