Fig, Tahini and Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

Not many of us saw it coming, certainly not me, way back in 1989 when La Brea Bakery opened, and I thought, โ€œWho the heck is going to buy freshly baked bread in Los Angeles? Thatโ€™ll never workโ€ฆโ€ And the rest, as they say, is history, as La Brea Bakery and Campanile restaurant, the adjacent restaurant in the same Spanish-style building (that Charlie Chaplin built),โ€ฆ

Echo Deli in Paris

I donโ€™t get out for lunch as much as I used to, or want to, but a dizzying amount of cafรฉs, restaurants, and pastry shops have opened while I was holed up writing books. One that was getting an inordinate amount of good word-of-mouth, from friends and other restaurant owners, was Echo Deli. Entering the restaurant late morning, I was startled by the amount ofโ€ฆ

Malva Pudding Cakes

Before a recent visit to Los Angeles, Iโ€™d heard a lot about Sqirl, a quirky restaurant with a funny name. People were imploring me to go. So much so, that if I didnโ€™t, Iโ€™d be racked with guilt for the next five to seven years. (Which I think was the intended effect.) Whatever it was, it worked, and when planning to meet up with aโ€ฆ

L.A.

Iโ€™m one of those people who loves Los Angeles. Even rarer, Iโ€™m one of those San Franciscans who loves Los Angeles. Each sometimes writes off the other, and the two big cities in California are often at odds with each other. One is serious, grey, and a little foreboding and mysterious. The other sunny and warm, with an upbeat attitude that even after visiting forโ€ฆ

Le Pont de Brent

After my visit to the Vevey market with Chef Stรฉphane Dรฉcotterd, we headed back to Le Pont de Brent, his restaurant located above the lakeside Swiss town of Montreux. While he was laying out the fish for the day, which he had just sourced, I noticed the kitchen was unusually calm for pre-service and I didnโ€™t see anyone in the usual panic that happens inโ€ฆ

Erin McKenna Bakery, New York City

The first place I had on my list of places to go in New York City was Erin McKennaโ€™s Bakery NYC. Ever since I saw the video of the staff having a blast, I was transfixed on going there to participate in the fun and frolic. The bakeryย is owned by Erin McKenna, and features vegan desserts made without gluten or refined sugar. Thereโ€™s also treatsโ€ฆ

Nancy Silvertonโ€™s Bran Muffins

I donโ€™t know if my grandmother loved to cook, but she was certainly good at it. Which was a good thing, because she sure loved to eat. When people tell me, โ€œI donโ€™t have time to cook. I have a job and two kids at homeโ€ I think of my grandmother, that had four kids, opened and ran a huge five-story furniture store which sheโ€ฆ

California Caramels: Little Flower Candy Company

Last year I read about a pastry chef-turned-candymaker in Los Angeles. She was becoming known around those parts for her tender caramels, blended with wisps of sel de mer (sea salt.) Inspired by the amazing CBS, caramel-beurre-salรฉ caramels produced by the master himself, Henri LeRoux, Christine Mooreโ€™s caramels are indeed the best Iโ€™ve had in the US. A friend drove me out to the Silverlakeโ€ฆ
