Meert, Franck Kestener & Epices Roellinger Come to Paris

Three sweet spots have arrived to Paris. I took a bit of time to sample a few of their specialtiesโ€”although Iโ€™m looking forward to going back to explore more of their confections. Hereโ€™s a few favorite tastes from eachโ€ฆ This outpost of the famed pรขtisserie Meert in Lille has opened on a corner, just a few blocks from the bustle of the overly-hectic streets ofโ€ฆ

Favorite Cookbooks of 2010

2010 was a very big year for cookbooks. And when I say โ€œbigโ€, I donโ€™t just mean there were plenty of great cookbooks published this year, but some of them were huge. Ready for Dessert tipped the bakerโ€™s scale at over 3-pounds, and subsequent books that continued throughout the year tested the limits of my strength, such as Bon Appรฉtit Desserts, which weighs in atโ€ฆ

I Love Macarons!

For some reason, the world went a little nuts for Parisian macarons in the past year and everyone, from New York to New Delhi, seemed to be fascinated by these little sandwich cookies. Notice that I said โ€œParisianโ€ macarons, since you wonโ€™t find these too far outside of Paris. Folks in the rest of France make more traditional macarons, made from a simple meringue withโ€ฆ

Paris Gastronomy Tour

Doing a culinary tour in Paris is always fun, because not only do I get to meet some new people and make new friends (importantโ€ฆsince the old ones keep deserting me), but I get to revisit my favorite places in Paris. And this week, we made a detour in Lyon as well. So there was a lot more to see, and eatโ€ฆ Lyon is aโ€ฆ

Coasting la Cรดte

When I heard there was going to be an inaugural voyage for the recently refubished Club Med 2 sailboat, I was so excited to go, that I actually invited myself to come along. Since the trip was a press preview, with a sprinkling of the rich and perhaps famous to rub elbows with, and since I lived so close, I saw no reason why Iโ€ฆ

Caille

The yogurt aisle in any French supermarket is the largest, longest, most well-stocked aisle in the store. (Wine, I think, runs a close second.) While thereโ€™s a disconcerting number of dubious treats there (coconut macaron or lemon madeleine-flavored yogurt anyone?) the simplest varieties are wonderful. Iโ€™m hopelessly boring, but I like whole milk plain yogurt, which is my afternoon snack. I eat it with driedโ€ฆ

The Cookie That I Couldnโ€™t Eat

I like Pierre Hermรฉ very much. Heโ€™s a genius, and his stuff is gorgeous and the fellow deserves all the accolades that are bestowed upon him. He seems like a nice guy and his shops in Paris are swanky as all get-out. His white truffle macaron I found very intriguing. Rather brilliant, actually. And Iโ€™m a big fan of his Arabesque, two apricot-flavored disks withโ€ฆ

Making French Macarons: Instructions & Recipes

It seems like thereโ€™s a wave of macaron questions that are sweeping my way. Unlike les brownies or le gรขteau weekend (poundcake), successful macarons are more the result of the technique, rather than following a mere recipe. Thereโ€™s lots of tips and tricks around the web that will help you out with these little devils, including some interesting recipes, too. You can find my chocolateโ€ฆ

Macarons et Chocolat

A while back it was cannelรฉs. Those little eggy pastries baked with a cracky-crust, that everyone was going ga-ga over and just had to bring home the copper molds to make. (Hands up, folks. How many of you have ever used them?) Then everyone moved on to macarons, dainty little โ€œsandwichesโ€, made from two crispy almond meringues, with a layer of buttercream or jam inโ€ฆ
