Spiced Kefta

Persian food, like many of the foods from a region thatโ€™s often broadly referred to as the Middle East, takes cues from a variety of influences and cultures as people traverse borders and bring their delicious foods with them. Which is why the food in America is so diverse; people have gifted us with foods from their homelands, such as tacos, sushi, pizza, beer, andโ€ฆ

Ibrik Cafe

When I walked into Ibrik cafรฉ the other day and sat down in the upstairs dining room, I saw this scenario next to me. After spending the morning rummaging through an unruly restaurant supply salvage yard out in the suburbs (I didnโ€™t buy anything, but they gave me three cake pans as a gift), it was nice to sit somewhere that wasย clean, organized, and dryโ€ฆ.

Yafo Houmous Cafe

Middle Eastern restaurants that focus on freshness and quality of ingredientsย have been proliferating in places like London (Ottolenghi and Honey & Co.) and in the U.S. (Glasserie and Zahav) over the last few years. And now, weโ€™ve got a spate of new ones arriving in Paris. The foods of the Middle East had mostly been relegated to kebab and falafel stands, but new places areโ€ฆ

Mokonuts

I often wonder where people will go when they tell me they want to dine somewhere โ€œout-of-the-wayโ€ in Paris. Do they want to go to the outer reaches of the 20th or 15th arrondissements for lunch? And if they want to go somewhere where โ€œonly localsโ€ eat, will they be happy with a standardย plat du jour?ย Or do they want more creative cooking, with an accentโ€ฆ

Labneh

I have always loved Middle Eastern foods. The fresh vegetables, the liberal use of herbs and seasonings, including a touch of spiciness at times, and the casual way of eating that the food encourages. Meze is the term thatโ€™s used to define all the โ€œlittle platesโ€ that get brought out to begin in a meal, served in little bowls often with pools of olive oilโ€ฆ

Pickled Turnips

I know. Itโ€™s hard to get people excited about turnips. But on a recent trip to the Middle East, one of the things I loved most about the generous spreads of salads, roasted meats, and creamy-white cheeses that were a part of just about every meal, were the pickles โ€“ including pickled turnips, which were served even at breakfast. As someone who generally favors toastโ€ฆ

Maoz Falafel in Paris

Yes, thatโ€™s me in the corner, wolfing down falafels at Maoz. I was trying to figure out a way to break the news, but my favorite falafel place in Paris is not where you think it is. Last time I went to another joint, the French fries that came out were so light and limp that I was wondering what was going through the headโ€ฆ
