Bourbon Butterscotch Sauce

I donโ€™t like cliques (unless Iโ€™m part of it, of courseโ€ฆ) and I have to say, one that Iโ€™m happy to be a part of is the brotherhood, and sisterhood, of ice cream makers. I wasnโ€™t the first person to write a book, The Perfect Scoop, about making ice cream. But it landed on the cusp of something that was happening: People were rediscovering iceโ€ฆ

Butter & Scotch Bakery and Bar, and Rock & Rye Milkshake recipe

[As of September 2020, Butter & Scotch has closed its doors. Fortunately, they are still in the baking business and their treats are available at their online shop.] With over 1200 pastry shops, Paris has no shortage of places to satisfy oneโ€™s sweet cravings. That is, unless itโ€™s after 8pm, when all the bakery shelves are wiped clean and they close up for the nightโ€ฆ.

Ice & Vice

[Update: Due to the coronavirus, sadly Ice & Vice is shutting their doors November 2020.] One of the bestย parts of summer in the U.S.ย is heading out for ice cream on a warm evening. Even if youโ€™re someone like me, that always has a freezerful of ice cream, itโ€™s funย to head out somewhere and join others who are cooling down, lapping up cones on the streetsโ€ฆ

Ovenly

Sometimes when Iโ€™m doing events, such asย meet-ups and booksignings, people will kindly bring treats for me to eat. Itโ€™s always nice when people think of me, and my sweet tooth, when Iโ€™m on the road.ย However thereโ€™s nothing worse than trying to carry on a back-and-forthย withย someone who is chewing on food when youโ€™re not doing the same. It just doesnโ€™t work. My least favorite moment whenโ€ฆ

Eating Around Queens

One of the things about discovering new places to eat in an unknown city is that you spend a lot of time getting around, figuring out how to get from Point A to Point B, then to Point C, and so forth. Sometimes people are kind enough to suggest places that sound good. But when you look at the map, theyโ€™re an hour or moreโ€ฆ

A Visit to Babycakes NYC (Video)

ย  ย  Whenever I go to New York City, I am alwaysย delighted to spend some time with my friend Erin McKenna, owner and head baker at Erin McKenna Bakery, one of the sweetest places in Manhattan. On this visit, we had a nice chat, then headed to the kitchen where she taught me how to make gluten-free doughnuts (recipe included) and create the signature frostingโ€ฆ

Dining Around New York

The French have their paradoxes and so do Americans. Which was something I discovered over and over again while I was exploring New York with an especially inquisitive Frenchman in tow. There were lots of questions, like when watching television, itโ€™s tricky to explain why thereโ€™s a commercial for people stuffing their faces from all-you-can-eat buffet for $6.99 suddenly followed by an ad pushing low-calorieโ€ฆ

New York Barbecue

Iโ€™m pretty sure I canโ€™t eat anymore. But for some reason, I keep testing out that theory in New York. Thereโ€™s so many places to try, old favorites and new ones, that itโ€™s hard to stop. But when I found out a friend from Australia was in town, as well as my Frenchman in tow, when faced with the task of choosing a place toโ€ฆ

The Cookie Jar

Itโ€™s funny because whenever I come to New York, people always tell me about far-flung places that I, now a slightly bewildered tourist in this city, have barely heard of. (Although I seem to be pretty good at finding every TJ Maxx and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.) When people say, โ€œYou must go to Williamsburg!โ€ โ€“ I look at them funny, wondering why they areโ€ฆ
