Nutty Magdalenas

I have two confessions to make. The first is that I have a terrible tendency to wander around my place, looking for something to eat. It starts the moment I wake up, and no leftover cake or cookie is safe. And continues throughout the day as I forage and wander around, eating handfuls of nuts, chocolate chips, fruits and berries, or whatever else I canโ€ฆ

Things Iโ€™m Likingโ€ฆ

Les cassoles I love my everyday bowls, which were gifts from my friend Kate who lives in Gascony. Theyโ€™re from a semi-local potter which makes cassoles, the bowls for preparing Cassoulet. But Iโ€™ve loved these little fellas forever and use โ€™em for my daily soup and noodle bowls. Iโ€™ve posted pictures of them on the site and folks have asked me where oh where theyโ€ฆ

White Bean Dip

I canโ€™t believe that after all these years, Iโ€™ve never made white bean dip. Iโ€™ve made dips with eggplant, chickpeas, eggplant again, and even weeds, if you can believe it. I donโ€™t know, it always seemed like it would be too plain, or ho-hum. A mound of purรฉed beans? No thanks. But boy, was I wrong. First up, of course, are the beans. There areโ€ฆ

The Best Way to Use Up Leftover Bread

Iโ€™ve been on a bread-making bender lately, experimenting with various types of loaves. While testing recipes makes me learn a lot about how things work (and what doesnโ€™t!), Iโ€™ve been facing an onslaught of bread. Since Iโ€™m having guests over tonight, and I just made a few trays, I thought Iโ€™d share my favorite way to use up leftover bread. This isnโ€™t great for usingโ€ฆ

Eggplant Jam

The words โ€œeggplantโ€ and โ€œjamโ€ together might throw you, but if you stop to consider that eggplant โ€“ like tomatoes and squash โ€“ are botanically fruits, the idea doesnโ€™t seem all that far-fetched.ย And this combination of sweet and savory is so delicious, thereโ€™s no reason to hesitateย whipping up a bowl. I love foods from the Middle East and North Africa, andย I was leafing through oneโ€ฆ

Sheet Pan Pizza

Because I worked as a baker for a good portion of my life, for some reason, people mistakenly get it into their heads that I worked early morning hours. But anyone that has spent any time with me in the morning knows I am one to be feared if forced to interact with others before noon. When I worked in the restaurant, my shifts actuallyโ€ฆ

Jerusalem

I shouldnโ€™t have been surprised when I was talking to someone at the airport, just after my arrival in Israel, who had asked me what I was doing in her country. When I told her I was there to learn about the cuisine โ€“ by eating it, her eyes lit up, and she said โ€“ โ€œWhenever I leave Israel, after my family, the thing Iโ€ฆ

A Visit to a Hummus Factory

Almost all of the people I spoke with said they rarely make their own hummus, simply because the store-bought stuff was as good โ€“ if not better โ€“ than what they could make at home. (I guess it helps to think of it like peanut butter, where the homemade is very good, but store-bought will suffice.) People have very strong opinions about hummus, like theyโ€ฆ

Haj Kahil

When I left the restaurant Haj Kahil after lunch, I said to someone โ€“ โ€œThat was the best day of my life.โ€ When Erin, who was dining next to me, took a bite of the fried Halloumi cheese, her whole body softened, her eyes dimmed, and she looked as if she had been lulled into a trance. And when someone tried to talk to her,โ€ฆ
