La Cafeotheque de Paris

Iโ€™ve pretty much said everything I could about the โ€œcoffee issueโ€ in Paris here*, but one place thatโ€™s trying to buck the trend is La Cafรฉothรจque, a shop and cafรฉ that roasts coffee beans from all over the world. Itโ€™s also one of the (very) few places in Paris where Iโ€™ve seen a person preparing cafรฉ express (espresso) correctly, using a tamping device, and actuallyโ€ฆ

Grapefruit Campari Sorbet

Coming from San Francisco, a place where there essentially arenโ€™t any seasons, itโ€™s been an interesting transition living in France, where each season has its own rhythm and distinct feeling. Winter, as you can imagine, is the least favorite season of the year and this past winter was particularly somber and dismal. Parisians refer to the dreary gray days of winter, and the tristesse thatโ€ฆ

Nunu Chocolates from Brooklyn, in Paris

A few years ago an American friend asked me about opening a pop-up store in Paris, featuring something he creates with chocolate in New York City. At the time, I advised against it. People outside of the United States do have some preconceived notions about how Americans eat (many still think we all eat at fast-food restaurants), but a recent wave of magazine articles aboutโ€ฆ

Les Fines Gueules

Itโ€™s funny because I used to pass the building that houses Les Fines Gueules and think โ€œGosh, I would love to live in that building.โ€ Itโ€™s just off the stately Place des Victoires, on a corner lot, and really, how nice would it be to sit on that balcony and catch some sun while having my morning coffee? Then one day a few years agoโ€ฆ

Aki Boulanger

I had the good fortune to go to Japan many years ago. I was teaching at culinary schools and didnโ€™t have time to see much, but I ate very, very well when I managed to go to a restaurant in the evenings. The Japanese people I ate with seemed surprised at how much I liked โ€“ and wanted to eat โ€“ Japanese food. One nightโ€ฆ

A Visit to Patrick Roger Chocolate (Video)

Recently I visited the incredible laboratory of master French chocolatier Patrick Roger. His shops in Paris are some of my favorite places to swoon over chocolate and it was wonderful to have the chance to step behind-the-scenes and watch him make his extraordinary confections and impressive chocolate sculptures. Join me as I check out his workshop, as well as visit his garden and apiary. (Videoโ€ฆ

Why is the food so sad at Charles de Gaulle Airport?

[Update 2024: Since I wrote this article, a lot has changed at the airport, in terms of food, and there are much better places to eat at the airports in Paris. And there are now kiosks from some of the best chocolate and pastry shops in France at the airports, including Ladurรฉe, La Maison du Chocolat, and Pierre Hermรฉ. The food on the French trainsโ€ฆ

Vandermeersch: King of the Paris Kouglof

I was browsing through my archives this weekend and landed on a post that I wrote back in 2005, about Vandermeersch. The bakery is really out in the middle of nowhere and for most visitors and even local, whether youโ€™re going by foot or even by mรฉtro. But I was looking at the pictures Iโ€™d taken back then, which didnโ€™t do the kouglof justice, thatโ€ฆ

Un Dimanche a Paris

[Update: This shop is now closed.] Even though it wasnโ€™t Sunday, I decided to go to Un Dimanche ร  Paris anyway. This sleek showcase of chocolate is located in an under-utilized arcade on the Left Bank, near where the saleswoman told me has become โ€œThe quartier of chocolate.โ€ The owner of the shop is Pierre Cluizel of the famed French chocolate family, but heโ€™s strikingโ€ฆ
