Gerard Mulot in Paris

Thereโ€™s a new face in the Marais: Gรฉrard Mulot. Sure thereโ€™s lot of shoe shops, sunglass boutiques, and questionable โ€œartโ€ galleries in the Marais. But thereโ€™s a dearth of bakeries and pastry shops. So imagine my surprise and delight when one not-particularly-good bakery near me closed (the surprise part), then re-opened the other day asโ€ฆGรฉrard Mulot! (the delight) For those of you who donโ€™t knowโ€ฆ

Velib Bikes in Paris

As part of the mayorโ€™s plan to reduce traffic and congestion, starting July 15th, the city of Paris is commencing with a program called Vรฉlibโ€™ where you can borrow one of their 20,000 low-cost bicycles. The city has installed lots of bike lanes in anticipation, although pedestrians (and dogs) make such frequent use of them that bicyclists usually have a bit of tricky maneuvering toโ€ฆ

Moisan: Ficelle Apรฉritif

A ficelle is a small baguette, whose name actually means โ€˜stringโ€™. But in French bakery lingo it means a thin little crusty baguette. A ficelle makes a perfect petit snack, especially one like this thatโ€™s crusted with lots of poppy and sesame seeds. One of my all-time, tip-top favorite breads in Paris is the ficelle apรฉritif baked at Moisan bakery. Although primarily known for theirโ€ฆ

Paris Ice Cream Shops: Les Glaciers de Paris

Hereโ€™s my address book for the most popular and some of my favorite places for ice cream in Paris. I recently published an updated list of ice cream shops in Paris=> Here! In addition to these glaciers, some of the pรขtisseries make their own exceptionally-good ice cream which theyโ€™ll scoop up from freezers parked on the sidewalks outside during the summer. Some of the bestโ€ฆ

Cantal

Itโ€™s pretty overwhelming visiting a fromagerie. After years of trying as many French cheeses as I could, Iโ€™ve settled on a few favorites that I go back to over and over, which include moist, piquant Roquefort de Carles, which I like drizzled with chestnut honey, little rounds of tangy chรจvre and ash-covered Selles-sur-Cher, and nutty Comtรฉ from the French alps, which if you taste oneโ€ฆ

Who Is Josephine Vannier?

A blog is an online diary where you can write about what you see and what you eat. Itโ€™s a marvelous thing that you can use to share your culinary experiences for everyone to read. The flip side of having a blog is that others can, and do, read it. A while back I wrote something about a chocolate shop in the Marais that Iโ€ฆ

Parisโ€™ Dirty Little Secret

The water is Paris is rife with calcium. Which perhaps means thereโ€™s a low rate of osteoporosis in women around here. But it also means for the rest of us, we have to deal with this: Oh, the humiliationโ€ฆBut why, I ask? Why me? Because je suis Parisian (and itโ€™s not just me), so I dump sel in my dishwasher and dutifully pop in oneโ€ฆ
